Abortion ‘trauma’
disputed by survey

WASHINGTON (AP) — The American Psych.
ological Association says a survey of the scientific
research on abortion suggests that most women suffer
no lasting emotional problems from the procedure.

“By and large, what you find is that most. of the
women who have abortions experience “a sense of
relief,” Brian Wilcox, director of public interest
legislation at the association, said in an interview,

‘The association's survey found that much research
on the subject has been flawed, but it-also found-the
notion of a post-abortion syndrome is not. a
“scientifically or medically recognized” disorder.

Earlier this year, U.S. Surgeon General C.
Everett Koop said in a letter to the White House that
there was no scientifically sound evidence showing
negative health effects to the 1.5 million women who get
abortions annually.

Groups opposed to abortion have promoted the idea
of a “post-abortion trauma,” typically by offering
anecdotal evidence about individual cases.

Olivia Gans, director of a group called American
Vietims of Abortion, said negative findings on the
effects of abortion are absent from scientific literature
because the American Psychological Association and
the American Medical Association have a pro-abortion
“bias.”

But she agreed with both Wilcox and Koop that
more research on the subject is needed.

LACK COMPARISON

Wilcox said association experts surveyed more
than 100 studies on the psychological effects of abortion
and found that most:were flawed scientifically because
they failed to make valid comparisons. For example,
Wileox said, no studies have directly compared the
relative effects on women” who choose abortion with
those who decide to bear an-unwanted child for
adoption, Or raise a child out of wedlock

In general, however, the studies do not show any
lasting psychological trauma that can be attributed to
abortion, he said.

“It's clear that the vast majority of women are not
going to experience any significant problems,” Wilcox
said. “Millions of women are having abortions and it

appears to be a relatively benign proceduré both
medically and psychologically. It just depends on the
circumstances surrounding the abortion.”

Wilcox said there is “the occasional woman” who
has difficulty adjusting emotionally after an abortion,
“but that depends on whether she has had psychological
problems in the past and what motivated the abortion, or
if. she was forced into having anabortion.

“If a woman had to have an abortion and she didn’t
want it,-she-might feel very badly about it,” he said.
“But the vast majority of abortions are chosen .by
women,”

Gans, however, maintained that 1 many women
experience great difficulty after an abortion.

Professionals are beginning to compile research on
the syndrome, “but they are having difficulty getting
published,” she said.

Gans said an organization catied the Association for
Interdisciplinary Research-in Values and Social Change
has been formed “to get some cohesion on thes@ clinical
experiences, these anecdotal bits of evidence that are
coming together forming this theory.

“The association was founded becduse many of the
members felt they were not finding the forum they need
to discuss it in a scientific way,” she said.

She said both the psychologi¢al and the medical
associations display “hostility” toward studies that
produce negative findings about abortion.

Nancy Filipe Russo, director of Women’s Studies at
Arizona State, said thete is no clear, scientifically valid
study that compares‘ the psychological effects of
abortion with other common reproductive choices such
as—childbearing for adoption or formation of a
single-parent family

But she said it is clear that “having babies is more
risky than haying an abortion.”
