SUB RATES The News i: published by Castle jews Ltd. for Scott David Harrison EDITOR Laid off Westar employees want the provincial government. to hurry up. “What are they doing, trying to reinvent the wheel,” asked International Woodworkers of America Local 1-405 Westar Chairman Tony Ferreira. “How long does it take to approve the transfer?” Out of jobs since November, Ferreira said his 280 IWA members have become increasingly frustrated by provincial red tape. In an effort to separate fact from fiction, Ferreira has called a meeting of the membership for Thursday Divers fail to discover Perepelkin NEWS STAFF A search of-the Columbia River Monday failed to uncover a missing Nelson trucker. RCMP divers spent the morning combing the waters near the Kinnaird Bridge in search of Dennis Perepelkin, but found no clues. A helicopter search of the river also produced no signs of the 42- year-old. Perepelkin disappeared from his Esso fuel truck on Jan. 16 en route to Castlegar from Nelson. His truck, with the keys still in the ignition, was found at.the Kinnaird Bridge. A reported sighting in a Burnaby convenience store also proved false. The store, which runs 24-hour video surveillance, thought it had taped Perepelkin. That lead was dismissed, though, when the Castlegar RCMP allowed the family to view the tape. at 10 a.m: at the Castlegar and District Community Complex. “What I am being faced with by the membership is a lot of questions that I don’t have the answers to.” According to Ferreira, the question first and foremost in local IWA members minds, is when will the mill reopen. The Castlegar mill was sold two weeks ago to Midway-based Pope and Talbot Ltd. for $22 million U.S. In addition to the mill purchase, Pope and Talbot is also seeking to take over 70 per cent of Tree Farm Licence No. 23. Both deals are subject to public hearings, which begin Tuesday in Castlegar. IWA calls for speedy Westar dea Ferreira said he has been informed Forest Minster Dan Miller will make a decision on the mill sale and TFL transfer on March 26 — some six weeks after the final public hearing. “I can’t understand. why it is taking so long,” Ferreira said. “Our members. are suffering right now. Some are close to losing their homes.” No one at the ministry could confirm Miller will make a decision on March 26. Ferreira said Thursday’s [WA meeting will allow the local membership to map strategies for the Castlegar public hearing, set for 7 p.m. at the Community Complex. Ferreira said he is concerned that a similar public hearing in Revelstoke on Feb. 13 may derail a speedy-transfer. “The potential for jobs isn’t in Revelstoke’ like it is in Castlegar,” Ferreira said. “We have 280 solid, good paying jobs here. And that’s just here, there are more solid, good paying jobs in Nakusp and up the river. “Revelstoke doesn’t know what it is talking about and it should listen before it speaks.” Friesen promises prosperity Ml Pope & Talbot president ready to get logs rolling at ere Castlegar Scott David Harrison EDITOR Abe Friesen wants. to get to work. The president of Pope and Talbot Ltd. says as long as things go his way, he’s anxious to get his hands on .the Castlegar mill and Tree Farm Licence No. 23. Any changes could mean a different story, though. Appearing before Castlegar city council Tuesday, Friesen said he wants the government to honor the deal hammered out by Pope and Talbot and ailing Westar. That deal, agreed to at $22 million U.S., includes the purchase of the mill and the southern portion of TFL No. 23 — equalling some 70 per cent. “Anything less, we certainly wouldn’t be as receptive,” Friesen told council. Friesen said he hoped “Revelstoke wouldn't impede the TFL transfer by requesting a greater share from the proposed TFL split. , : “The total agreement is a gain for all three communities,” Friesen said. “From Castlegar to Nakusp, right through to Revelstoke.” Friesen said the remaining 30 per cent of the TFL still “We consider that unfortunate.” should be brought to the Castlegar News at 197 Columbia Ave. later, after representatives from the B.C. “ > ‘Tat’ ives Revelstoke mills plenty of 5 The employer’s response was ‘Let’s meet ayes eth does ment Eovloree ee and Emcon tomorrow,” he said, adding that the two sides en to:imake the The tentative agreement-was struck down, Will meet. oe ‘ - Castlegar) mill a viable though, with 75 per cent of the union voting Fox said the union will withdraw services from operation, make it a cant te Weal PAGS three highway yards, including Rossland. operation, with secure well .
