I had this really ordinary name (Greg Pead) and I thought, ‘I can do better than this.” The other remarkable thing about Serious is the hair. It’s a brown mass that rises from his head like a bramble bush. He calls it ‘tan Australian sur- fing haircut’’ and claims it’s the reason he chose to portray Einstein — ‘the’s the only historical character with the same haircut.’ Serious came to L.A. for his first ex: posure to the American media, He may well bé the biggest Australian import since Paul Hogan. His film, Young Einstein, has broken records of Ram bo, Star Wars and the like in his home country Warner Bros. is hoping, not without some nervousness, that Serious will aich onin'North America. It’s hard to describe Young Einstein. You might call it acombination of rock music, silent-screen slapstick and bogus history. Yahoo plays Albert Einstein’ at the age of 26, when he discovered both relativity and rock ‘n’ roll. All this happens in Australia, you see. The inspiration for Young Einstein came during a trip down the Amazon River. He that you want to believe him. “I crossed the Andes with a mate, and we ended up on the border of Peru and Brazil and I think Colombia. We were going to take a boat down the Amazon. I don’t think they had Australians aboard before because we drank them out of beer in two days “We put in at a little village. The Brazilian native who was carrying the beer on board wore a T-shirt with a pic ture of Albert Einstein sticking his tongue out. Where he got the T-shirt in he middle of the Amazon jungle, | don’t know “That was the inspiration: The greatest mind of the 20th century doing something so irreverent and childlike at the age of 72. I thought, wow, we've got the basis fora film here.” Serious sold his car, bought some film, borrowed a camera, gathered a cast and crew and began shooting When he ran out of money, he borrowed an editing machine, put together what he had filmed and sought financing Amazingly, he found backing from some investors, the Australian Film Commission, an Australian distributor — and Warner Bros lates it with such sincerity COMMUNITY Bulletin Board CHRISTIAN WOMEN’S CLUB Fireside Motor Inn. Thursdays for Sundays paper COMMUNITY Bulletin Board Spying alive and well in new novel By DEAN BEEBY The Canadian Press The superpowers may be basking in the glow of glasnost, but spying is very much alive‘and well — at Jeast in the imagination of novelist John le Carre. ‘i The Russia House, le Casre’s latest espionage tale, is set for the most part in Mikhail Gorbachev's turbulent and troubled Moscow And like many of le Carre’s previous 11 novels, the book is populated with British spies who are disillusioned about their jobs and their lives but still valiantly soldier on They may adapt glasnost to their latest chess moves but are not about to let up guard. Business is business, after all, and it’s no less dirty now than under Brezhnev or Nixon “Here we are, locked into the biggest ideological face-off in history, and you fell me\t "sall over because a handful of statesmen find it convenient to hold hands in public and scrap a few obsolete toys,”” rants one of the book's minor characters, “Just don’t tell me that’s a reason for unbuckling our guns . . . It’s a reason for spying the living daylights out of them 25 hours a\day.”” RINGS TRUE Le Carre himself was a foot soldier in Britain's spook army in the early 1960s and his descriptions of modern spycraft ring true, as if old spy mates continue to brief-him; And it seems reasonable to conctude that the vast bureauctacies of MI-5, MI-6, the CIA and the KGB will survive glasnost intact and still be at each other’s throats. As long)as there are states, there will be secrets to steal In any case, the spy world for le Carre is never more than ametaphor for the modern human condition. He is fascinated and appalled by the act of betrayal and, in the espionage game, he has found the perfect backdrop to explore that theme. The Russia House is firmly in the le Carre tradition There are the turf wars, the broken and strained marriages, the excessive drinking, the cynicism. The story is told from the point of view of a British lawyer working in the intelligence service who lards his narration with regrets about his career and his extra marital affair But le Carre adds a twist. The plot revolves around a failed, alcoholic publisher, Barley Blair, who is reluc tantly conscripted by British intelligence, His task is to contact a dissident Soviet physicist and a beautiful Russian woman editor, Katya, both of whom want to convey secrets to the West for the cause of peace. Le Carre has thus pushed the professional spies to the background and focused on ordinary people trying to rise above the petty rivalries of superpowers. The “espiocrats,’” as he calls.the professionals, come off looking like heartless technicians or ruthless bureaucrats with no moral centre. Barley Blair, on the other hand, finds his own moral_centre through Katya. He undergoes a_kind-of resurrection that releases him from his failures, his drinking and his spymasters. The grand themes of war and peace pale beside his discovery of other human beings acting courageously and with pure hearts. Through his character, the book becomes a plea for peace without politics. Blair is a well-rounded character, no doubt because he is male and in his 50s, not unlike the author. Katya, on the other hand, falls flat. She is handy to the plot but never gets beyond two dimensions, and in the end we ac cept that Blair is smitten by her but are never quite sure why. Smitarty, the book's American spies are crude caricatures. But le Carre’s skill as a narrator overrides these shortcomings. His observations of human frailties are devastating, and his mastery of vocabulary and form constantly surprises. Le Carre has said his previous novel, A Perfect Spy, exorcized the ghost of his father and set him upon a new path in his writing. He promises never to abandon the intelligence world, but The Russia House suggests that real people will now start to usurp and challenge his professional spies. The Russia House, by John le Carre.
