extent of the fire last night was known,
the Recoxp was upon the street with an

NEWS FROM OTTAWA.

Premier Agrees For Adjournment for
the Eastern Holidays.

In the house yesterday at Ottawa
Premier Laurier agreed that the ad-
journment for “the eastern holidays
should be from Wednesday next to the
following Tuesday.

McInnes, of Vancouver, moved the
adjournment of the house in order to
bring up the question of the attitude of
the Globe on railway matters in British
Columbia,

Ina speech last Monday in support of
the disallowance of the British Columbia
Southern railway act, McInnes suppor-
ted the demand for disallowance on the

| ground that the province had granted

3,000,000 acres of cual lands in the
province to the British Columbia Sou-
thern company,whose charter had been
acquired by the C.P.R,,and argued that
he C. P. R. were enabled to consiruct
Crow’s- Nest Pass railway they
would have a ruthless monopoly, He
censured the Globe for supporting this
monopoly, accused it of deception and
alluded ‘to the C. P. R. as the Globe’s
master. The Globe retorted next day
by calling McInnes a “liar and a sland-
erer,” and has been calling McInnes
liar and slanderer in every issue since,
adding that he was an expert at the
business.
McInnes reiterated his position, and
declared that the Globe’s courge was due
to the fact that two of its most promi-
nent directors were profiting from the
sale of the British Columbia» Southern
charter to the C. P. R., and that there
were other substantial reasons for the
Globe’s right-about-face on the question
of railway 1 He declared that

LANCASTER HOUSE BURNED.

De Voin’s House Badly Scorched and
Patterson’s Destroyed.

At8o’clock last’ evening — the fire
bell rang out and the whole populace
rushed toward the bell tower to as-
certain where the fire was. It was but
afew moments when the flames were
shooting up in the east end of town.
The Lancaster house was on fire,

The Dominion government has de-
cided to send a fitting representation of
the Canadian military forces in connec-
tion witn the jubilee to England, This
does not inelv ie any private volunteer
arrangement now going on with the de-
partment, such as Colonel Burland
spoke of. ~
The official statement tomorrow will
show an increase of 674, in customs
in March aud 4888,000 in exise, or a
total increase iu the two items of $1,482,-
000 for the two months of the fiscal year.
There is over $500.00 increase in re-
venuue as compared with the same time
last year.

ters are supported by many mine own-

An Interesting Letter From That
Section About the Mines.

During the past three or four months
this camp has taken a new lease of life
and is now moving actively in the de-
velopment of many good properties. No
idle men are seen on our streets, and
good, practical miners are in demand.
Real estate values have advanced, and
residences are at a premium; there is
not a yacant house to be had,

Work on the various properties is pro-
gressing favorably, and in most cases
with satisfactory results. On the Taritf
the incline shaft is down nearly 200 feet
and every ineh of the distance in_ solid
ore. ‘The south drift, also in ore its en-
tire length of 150 feet, willsoon be under
the south or No. shaft, when a raise con-
necting the two will be made. 8
shipments of ore, taken out in devel
ment, have been made, but no ore will
be taken down or regular shipments
made until the proposed tunnel from the
bench below the mine has been. run, and
connection made with the main shaft.
Two or three small snow slides have
piled up the snow to a depth of 15 to 20
feet close to the mine.

The No. 1 still continues to get out its
regular quantity of ore, but owing to
the road having become impossoble for
teains, nojshipments can be made for
some time. As work proceeds the prop-

1, is four and one-half feet in width,

d recent assays gave as high as 1,
ozs. silver per ton. Drifting, both north
and south on this lead. gives increasing
evidence of the richness of the Dellie
lead.

On the Little Phil, Black Diamond
and Little Donald, all under one man-
agement, good progress is being made,
and several ore shipments have been
sent out.

Owing to thé lateness of the season,
when the present management took
posession, and the lack of suitable

uildings, it was some time before regu-
lar systematic work on the ore was un-
der way, but such showing has
been made that the Little Phil alone
has sufficient ore in sight to keep a con-
centrator running steadily. It is pto-
sed to erect a concentrator of 100 tons
daily capacity in the early summer.

The Jetf Davis, covering a portion of
the townsite, is now being operated by a
stock company. This claim, located in
1888, has had ‘only assessment work done
on it until last winter when a purchase
of part of the townsite was made and
active work commenced by the Jeff
Davis owners. The ledge isa large one
and extends nearly the entire length of
the claim. A contract to sink 50 feet
was recently let, and when down 12 feet
a large body of ore was struck ‘carrying
rich silver and copper ores,

This claim has long been regarded by
practieal men here as one of the most
Rromiaing inthe camp, and the work

lone heretofore and the late strike
seems to confirm the idea,

Orders for lumber have been given
and the erection of the necessary build-
ings, together with shaft house for the
80-horse-power boiler and engine and
No. 8 Knowles pump, will soon be under

way.

On the Kate L. a 60-foot tunncl was
recently run and the ledge tapped. This
claim lies south of the Jeff Davis. The
Ainsworth M. & M. company have a fine

up by litigation, and consequently all
lots are off the market for the time
being. But this is not the first time
this affair has occurred. The same
methods have been employed for almost
the past year. Parties with unlimited
capital have been coming here with the
intention of investing, and arrived here
only to find all the town lots off the
market, and left in disgust again and
sought other localities in which to in-
vest their money. This condition of af-
fairs has had a tendency to put Slocan
City in a bad light outside.

The News has been patiently with-
holding the f: cts of the matter, thinking
perhaps that a speedy and amicable ad-
Justment of affairs’ would soon be
reached. But patience has ceased to be
a virtue, and unless the matter is
straightened out it will proceed to
thoroughly ventilate the whole affair
and endeavor to ascertain why this
damnable state of affairs should exist.
