The Reconp on behalf of the American |; people who have cast their fortune with Rossland desires to heartily thank Mayor Scott; Mr. W. J. Nelson for his eloquent and appropriate address, the fire boys, Mrs. M. E. Allan, Mr. Louis Blue, the committee who made euch a grand success of the day, and each and every one who lent a helping hand. May we of both nations grow nearer and nearer together, and ever hold dear the feeling which so unanimously prevailed in Rossland today. PULPIT THEMES YESTERDAY. Services and Sermons in Ross- land’s Churches Yesterday —The Subjects. “The greatest question of the day,” wast ably handled by Rev. Best, yester- day at both the morning and evening services. In the morning he referred to America’s independence day and sail tht that great republic fought for the very princip’es which Canada now en- joys. Hebrews, 2nd chapter, 3d verse, “How shail we escape if we neglect co greata salvation,” was the taxt chosen. The guspel wasn great educator in the sciences, arts and literature. The preacher laid special stress and em- phasis upon the little word ‘‘so” as used in connection with “so great a ealva- tion.” It cant so much. Salvation Wag great in conception, resources, xac- Tifices and saving power, Christ’e sal- vation dated from the foundation of the world 4000 yeara ago and was given again on calvary. What was to be dune with these twocontradictory statements. God's word explained it. A promisory note pays for a debt for the time heing. Christ gave himself up to work for re- deinption, for which he gave God his Ppromisory note, Who accepted it. When it became due 4009 years later ‘Christ then went to the cross cf calvary and paid it. Add iother thought to conception, that of redemption which God thought ‘of before man was made. Think back to the ime when there were no land or seas, no planetary system nor universe; mot a san toshine, no moon, no stars, no angels and no existence outside of God. God then brought into existence Ques to serve him; that no one dare ‘be dogmatic enough to deny. He was satisfied with what He had done but He was not satisfied with angels alone. God ‘contempla'ed creatures ef a_ higher order of intelligence than angels when le man. Angels will be ofa jower order than man Radian will ever. judge angels. Man will walk where angels dare not tread. God to man gave the . government of Whis universe. What does redemption mean tous? The devil was a liar and the only time he toid the truth was syhen he told Adam and Eve, that if they ate of the forbidden fruit they would; become as wise as gods. The ‘second point is that salvation is ‘Breat in ite resources. Jacob’s dreain ‘of a ladder to heaven is a picture of onr redemption. Look at the coal- beds of the cuast, the rich mines all about us, who pat the fishes into the wea; were they for the purpose of feed- ing each other? no for man’s benefit. Why do the birds warble their beauti- ful songs, just to hear their own voice? no the songs were tuned for the ear of aman, The sun shines for man and God taxcs the universe for man. The minister referred to {the Jewish history and showed that people’s. fatal anistake in rejecting Christ. “I wish to tell you Canadians a secret,,’ he said. Tomorrowisa celebra- tion for the independence of the greatest republic on earth. Have we not been ‘on the eve of rebellion, once, nay, thrice tor the very principles which the Am- ericans fought for? Therefore, I say that God’s hand, moving throagh the reat republic, hae taught a lesson that hay been read’by the kings, the mon- archs, and nations. is giving free gospel to the Americans, has spread its vnefits so that today Canada is the gainer. Shoulder tu shoulder and heart to heart the two great nations march forward together in the race of progress. We do not look to any nations except the United States and British empire, except to the Anglo Saxon race, to " read the gospel to the uttermost parts the earth. he Canadians themselves hava merged into the nationai blood of the United States, and vice versa.” SCHURCH OF ENGLAND. In his announcements last 2 ning Rev. Mr. Irwin said he had not been at home much during the last week and that he walked twenty miles before breakfast Sunday morning in order to attend eervices in Rossland. The dis- trict is large and the pastors few, and their services were, required over a large field, which occa- sioned an absence from ‘home seve you really are, do not deceive dnd then you will ve able to others the first steps in christianity, for one must have had the experience to gain the knowledge. It does not make ‘much difference what your past has en. You don’t want to live in the past, but try and live as a live manor woman of the present. Irwin said he believed that the friend- ships made in the west were the clean- est made in the lives of many, as those of us who are now here are a part and parcel of the history of Rossland, as we are making the history of the city each day. There is no possible strength ex- cept in union. PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH. Next Sunday morning the Communion of the Lord’s Supper will be adminis- tered in the Presbyterian church, to which all members are invited, and those having church letters are requested to present them, “Beloved, now are we the sons of God; and it doth not yet appear what we shall be; but we know that, when He shall shale we shall be like Him; for we all see Him as He is.’’—First John, tie above was the text taken by the Rev. Mr. Curry in the Presbyterian church Jesterday morning. He said the spirit o| love should guide us. Love is he greatest thing in the world; some seem to think knowledge greater, but knowledge puffeth up while love edifies. There were times when christians re- fused to eat the flesh that had been orfered up to idols, but the strong and tried christian found as much strength and nutriment in the meat as though it had never been used for The weak stumbled rc conduct to brethren, but by his oh aus of love, ‘Lhrough leve this world is to be conquered to God. The Kaslo club has not apologized, but the Miner has says the Kootenaian. It announces that “the explanation of Secretary Strathern, of the Kaslo lacrosse ¢lub, proves that the Kaslo club was not alone to blame for its failure to play Lere on Jubilee day. We are glad to admit this, The management of the Rowland stub seems to have treated very discourteously pro" Pally for the best thatthe has been reorganized. We trust that in the interest of amateur sport the league will follow Rosslan l’s example and arrange a new schedule, which will give each town an equal number of gamer.’”’ It will be observed that the apology, not a particularly gra- cious one, by tl he way, comes from the Miner instead of from the Kaslo team.
