CASTLEGAR NEWS, Thursday, May 26, 1977 agp Pulpit and Pew By Pastor DONALD W. REED It happened in an obscure, modest little town. The name of the town was Cana, but it might just as well have been Castle- gar. It was the occasion of Christ's first miracle but that was not the real event. The main event that day was a : wedding. For me, weddings are always happy occasions, full of ' hope and joy and love, And this scene was fraught with all the excitement, wonder and delight of any typical wedding of our _ day. And perhaps the most +. beautiful part of all was that ‘Jesus was there. He was there because He was invited. I think there would be far “fewer broken marriages and’ spoiled homes if Jesus were ~ always invited to our weddings. Three is never a crowd when one of them is Jesus. The success, harmony and happi- ness of married life depends ; more than most realize on : Christ's presence. His benedic- "tion, His abiding residence and sovereign direction. The marriage at Cana was so much a happier wedding and a better day for His presence. But I note a. strange * gtatement in the record. It says (the passage is found in John chapter two): “The wine failed.” “It” wis “Byron “wlio * wrote, “Full clad in radiant west deceptively went forth the morn.” It seems to be a law of life that the romantic love of marriage “but sparkles near . The head-waiter knew nothing about it. And his comment to the bridegroom upon tasting the ‘replenished’ wine Is so revealing. “Every man," he says, “serves the good wine first and when men have drunk freely, then that which is poorer; you have kept the good wine until. now.” I believe that when Jesus is a constant partner in the home, it can always be said, “You have kept the good. wine until now.” Because I also believe that with Jesus pre- sent, marriage can be an ever-enrichening experience; it doesn't have to lose its radi- ance, its excitement, its inten- sity. But don't leave it all to Jesus; you have to work at it as well. Never allow the gestures of love to disappear from your home. It was Pau} Popenoe who said that final success in marriage is not a matter of what you start with but of your attitude toward the whole process of living together. . Maybe the little ditty says it as well as anything: “Say it with candy, say it with flowers; your love, let me measure or weight it. Say it with a ring, or with any old thing, but say it.” Happy homes are not as rare as you think, especially where Jesus is the invited and consfant guest. Alcoholism Is Blamed On Cellular Defect Alcoholism may be caused by a cellular defect which al- lows an addictive chemical compound into the brain, two researchers at Indiana's Pur- due University claim. If their theory is proven, they say, the only. way a re- covered alcoholic can avoid a relapse is total abstinence. The Purdue findings con- tradiet a recent study published by the Rand Corp., which in- dicates that many recovered alcoholics may resume moder- ate drinking without a relapse. Robert Myers, professor of and the brim. and inevitably, the physical facets of wedded love fade and fail. Sooner or later the griev- ances come, the disagreements, . the quarrels, the tensions, the resentments, In how many homes in Castlegar has the wine failed? The strange part about itis . that Jesus was there and let it happen. The wine failed’ even though Jesus was present. But do you remember what ‘ happened? That was the day that Jesus turned. the water into wine. But only the servants of the household knew what ~had happened. selénces at Purdue, and-Chris- tine Melchior, a graduate stu- dent and a fellow of the Purdue Research Foundation, based their findings on a year-long series of experiments on Jabora- tory rats. The researchers contend that any one of a family of. closely related compounds— products of the metabolism of alcohol—can cause alcoholism in rats when smal! amounts of the substances are introduced into their brains, They began. their investi- gation early last year, injecting small amounts’ of the. com- pounds into the fluid space in the brains of rats. Rats normal- ly shun alcohol. The rats had a choice of water or alcohol: solutions to drink, At the beginning of the experiment, they drank only traces of alcohol, but after the infusions began, rats receiving the compounds drank up to 20 times as much alcohol.
