Castlegar News June 12, 1991 IN MEMORY John Alexander Brooke John Ak der Brooke of Castl died Monday, June 10, 1991, at age 73. Mr. Brooke was born Aug. 8, 1917, at West Burnaby, B.C., and grew up in the Vancouver area, He enlis in 1939 and served as a gunner overseas unti! in 1945. He worked as a postman and in sawmills while living in B.C. In 1954, he moved to Edmonton and worked as a bartender and bar in the hotel busi He came to Castlegar in 1988. Mr. Brooke enjoyed gardening and was an avid bowler. He was also a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion. He is survived by his wife, Margaret, of Castlegar; son Alick of Sherwood Park, Alta.; three daughters, Judith Brooke of Lethbridge, Alta., Penny Pipkey of Robson and Jacqueline Whitford of Grande Prairie, Alta.; step-daughter Roxanne Jones of Grand Forks, B.C.; step-son Gary Jones of Okotoks, Alta.; 18 grandchildren; and two great- grandchildren. Funeral service will be held at the Castlegar Funeral Chapel on Thursday, June 13 at 3 p.m. with the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 57 officiating. Cremation to follow. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Castlegar Funeral Chapel Bill Edward Kinakin Bill Edward Kinakin of Glade, B.C., died Tuesday, June 11, 1991, at Kootenay Lake District Hospital at age 85. Mr. Kinakin was born Dec. 10, 1905, at Arran, Sask., and came to Glade with his parents. He married Polly Nichvolodoff at Glade. She died in 1978. During his life, he worked as a logger, in construction, as a saw filer and a pipefitter. He enjoyed carving wooden ladles as a hobby. Mr. Kinakin is survived by one son, Bill of New i , B.C.; three daughters, Verna and Tina Gretchen of Glade, and Lucy Wasilenkoff of Shoreacres; five grandchildren; two brothers, Mike Kinakin of Mount St. Francis Hi I and Pete Kinakin of Castlegar. Besides his wife, Mr. Kinakin was predeceased by one sister, Molly Kooznetsoff, irfi1975. Funeral services will be héld at the Castlegar Funeral Chapel and Glade Russian Hall on Thursday and Friday with burial in the Glade Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Castlegar Funeral Chapel. Annie Osachoff wi Annie Osachoff of Appledale, B.C., died Saturday, June 8, 1991, at age 91. Mrs. Osachoff was born May 6, 1900, at Buchanan, Sask., and came to Brilliant with her parents in the early 1900s. She married Nick A. Osachoff at Brilliant and then moved to Edgewood, B.C., in 1927 and to Appledale in 1932, where she lived until her death. She enjoyed gardening and sewing. She is survived by three grandchild: . Harry Rozinkin of Vancouver, Phillip Rozinkin of Glade and George Rozinkin of Kelowna; and one sister at Vallican. She was predeceased by her husband in 1978; one son, Angus, in 1979 and one daughter, Helen Rozinkin, in 1981. Funeral service will be held at the Castlegar Funeral Chapel on Thursday with burial at the Perry Siding Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Castlegar Funeral Chapel. Two of her current charges are Bucko and mothers were killed on highways in the region Helen Nichol recognized for her care of wildlife Helen Nichol of Blewett has won @ 1991 Minister’s Environ- mental Award for her dedicat- ed efforts in caring for injured and orphaned wildlife over the past 20 years. Nichol won in the individu- al-citizen category. Since 1971, she has volun- tarily nursed hundreds of injured and orphaned animals back to health at her farm in Blewett, west of Nelson, the B.C. Environment Ministry Says in a news release. Over that time, her charges have included seven black bear cubs, one grizzly cub, a porcu- pine, two coyote pups, a moun- tain goat kid, 26 squirrels, 13 osprey, 31 owls, 27 hawks, 15 hummingbirds and two wild turkeys. One recent visitor was Missy, an orphaned moose calf brought to Nichol by wildlife Program staff when it was just a few days old. When released five months later, Missy weighed in at close to 136 kilo- grams and stood more than 1.5 metres high. Nichol operates her rehabili- tation centre under a permit from B.C. Environment's wildlife branch which allows her to possess wild animals.
