i i a al roo ae Ret TR ay tdi os Castlegar News April 15, 1987 Single living often worri TORONTO (CP) — Marsha is ful, single and happily searching. But there have been innumerable times in her 37 years when the vibrant public relations worker was 80 entangled in self-doubt that dating became a chore. ~ She was a classic victim of what has been erassly called the Old Maid Syndrome — the growing number of single women over 80 who can't find a satisfying relationship with men. It’s sex and the single woman, with a twist of panic. Many are taking their private turmoil to psychologists and psychiatrists, “I was in a relationship that I thought might be the real thing and I didn't want to blow it; I wanted to nip (any problems) in the bud,” Marsha, not her real name, says about her decision three years ago to seek professional help. “The pattern in my other relationships was that they only went so far.” Before the therapy sessions, dating “was a bit like taking your car into the shop and worrying about it while getting it fixed,” she said in an interview. “Now T've come around to realizing that it's in great working order and I have the satisfaction of knowing that I did everything I could.” ‘ACCEPT PAIN’ Although Marsha’s hot-and-heavy liaison broke up after a year, her sessions over six months with Toronto psychologist Barbara Bresver helped her “accept the pain with no second-guessing. “Now, when a relationship of mine ends, there's none of that ‘Well, I could have done this differently,’ " said the never-married Marsha. “I used to think it was always me causing the breakup, although I couldn't pin it on anything specific “Now I'm into dating in a big way because there's none of that pressure for it to succeed.” Bresver and other professionals in the field say as much as 40 per cent of their caseloads are women over 30 who have concerns about current relationships, are afraid to get involved with men or just can’t find one. “This is a phenomenon of this era,” said Gail Golden, a psychologist in London, Ont. Over the lasttwo decades women have tended to job hunt rather than man hunt — between 1970 and 1983, the STRONG LINK BETWEEN SLEEP AND EXERCISE By KIRK LaPOINTE Canadian Press It’s fairly simple: the less you sleep, the worse you exercise. And it seems the more you exercise, the better you sleep. But experts are still seeking a lot of answers about the relationship between snoozing and working out. So far, it's been easier to assess what lack of sleep does to exercise performance than to determine how exercise benefits from a good sleep. Studies show that a lack of sleep: — Makes muscles work less efficiently, lowering the level of enzymes that help them contract and relax. — Prevents the central nervous system from working properly, producing feelings of fatigue, anxiety and depression, and reduces tolerance of the stresses of exercise. — Lowers resistance to viruses, bacteria and sources of allergies, making it easier for you to get sick. — Reduces psychological fitness by cutting into your dream sleep in the hours just before waking, a time experts say the body uses to wash away some of the emotional stresses of the previous day. ANSWERS FEW Scientists and exercise experts are only now turning their attention to the exercise-sleep relationship. “[ don't think you'll find one study that provides many answers,” says Dr. Robert Goode, professor of exercise physiology and physical education at the University of Toronto. A 1983 study by researchers at University of Tasmania in Australia found that athletes tended to sleep longer. But it’s unclear if their fitness affected their sleep patterns — the subjects of the study may just have been good sleepers. Similarly, a 1984 study by the United States Army suggested that sleep quality improved as fitness improved — but it may have been the change of environment that prompted the change in sleep pattern. About 70 per cent of North American adults sleep about seven or eight hours a night, about 20 per cent sleep six hours or less and about 10 per cent sleep nine hours or more. Sleep habits are often dictated by your schedule — you want to watch the late news on television and have to be at work by 9 a.m., so you sleep between 11:30 p.m. and 7:30 a.m. If not influenced by schedules or external factors, people consistently sleep longer than usual — a finding that has prompted scientists to conclude we may be a sleep-deprived society tal-health Renting Quality Cars at Great Prices © SUBCOMPACTS * COMPACTS * VANS © TRUCKS © MID SIZE © STATION © FULL SIZE WAGONS rors 95 From (Small km Charge) Sea CASTLEGAR RAND FORKS New Location . co- 442-5200 rent-a-wreck pice. 365-2711 352-5122 HOMEGOODS FURNITURE WAREHOUSE Tues.-Sat., 9:30-5:30 China Creek Drive a Little to Save a Lot par rate of women in the labor force increased to 63 per cent from 88 per cent, When these career women are ready to get serious, the male pickings seem slim, Bresyer and Golden say. Th there are more than enough bachelors to ae x; Oat abd Oy go around, Statistics Canada figures indicate. In 1985, there were 599,000 women 30 or over who were single and never married, while the number of men in that category was 611,700. The problem for women is the younger competition. “The women I see are looking for single men — of whom there are not very many — taller, good looking and wealthier than them,” Golden says. But “traditionally, men want wdmen younger than them ‘and in what I like to call jobettes, a little job that gets them a bit of money, enough to keep them happy, and still allows them to take care of their men, “Many men don't want women whose loyalties are divided between them and their work.” COMMON FACTORS Although reasons for their man problems vary, Golden's female clients tend to Rave common elements — s1 ful careers, high incomes and complicated family backgrounds. They also share iP — poor eating or drinking, sleeping problems, anxiety and -de- pression. ‘That's when they seek help, paying upwards of $70 an hour. “I help them sort out what really matters to them and help them: broaden their field,” Golden. says. Society still tends to retain the old-maid tag, Golden says. “A woman's value is still largely based on who she marries and if she doesn’t have a man, she’s much more pathetic than a man who ean't find a woman. “That biological clock is still ticking, and some women start to panic when they're over 30, no man in sight and feel they may never have children.” Bresver says she tries to help a client realize her self-worth by focusing on her strengths, and know herself by looking at her relationships. SEE PATTERNS “I often go back to their relationships with their parents, and soon patterns start shaping,” says Bresver. For them more. ic Inner . Ou accom- modation, Moderately priced. The “transport ministry tested five methods of pro- tecting children in simulated school-bus accidents and found that turning the seats around is the cheapest way to improve safety, researcher Bill Gardner said. Bus accidents usually in- volve front-end collisions so a a child is facing the rear, said Gardner, who heads the ministry's crash worthiness standards branch. “Generally, we concluded there's no point in trying to soften the blow to the head of a school bus occupant in a crash,” Gardner said. “You're better to restrain them so their head doesn’t hit anything.” Results of the recently completed $75,000 study will likely be. published in a high, padded seat-back ae ae this summer, Gardner id. sorbs most of the shock whe: * Courtesy .
