The Nelson Women’s Centre had
its core funding cut as a result of the
federal government's recent budget.
A total of $1.2 million has been cut
from Women's Programs, Secretary
of State, including all core funding to

The women’s centre provides
community education on issues such
as sexual assault, wife assault, por-
trayal of women in the media and
pornography. It has also been in-
strumental in encouraging and
establishing services for women in
health care, employment and legal

advocacy. The centre was involved in
the planning and development of
Emma's Jambrosia, Kootenay
Womenworks and the Advocacy
Project.

In addition, the centre operates a
drop-in, a library and a resource cen-
tre, provides referrals to other com-
munity agencies, and runs a variety of
support groups for single parents,»
battered women and unemployed
women, a news release says. These
services have been done largely
through volunteer labor but need free
or very cheap space to function in.
The coordinator is also a crucial part
of these services, identifying women’s
needs and organizing the appropriate
service or resource, the release says.

Women and men in the community
can let the government know that the
women’s centre is important. Con-
cerned people are urged to write to
Finance Minister Michael Wilson to
let him know these cuts are not accep-
table, the release says. Copies of these

Smokers to get
more warnings

OTTAWA (CP) — The dangers of
smoking will be right there in black
and white for everyone to see — large,
highly visible warnings on every pack,
pouch and carton.

The intensified, warnings are part of
a new set of regulations announced by
Health Minister. Perrin Beatty in
January and outlined in detail on
Thursday.

They take effect June 1, 1991, after
a phasing-in period beginning Jan. 1,
1991.

The new regulations include four
new warnings to go on tobacco
packages with the four already in use.
Each cigarette package, carton or
pouch. of roll-your-own tobacco must
include one of the eight warnings.

Manufacturers will have to display

the warnings on the front and back of
packages with French on one side and
English on the other, the regulations
say.

The new regulations will force
manufacturers to print the warnings
25 per cent as large as the package in
black and white. The warnings will be
printed on top of the packages rather
than at the bottom as they are now.

Manufacturers will also have to
place a leaflet with more detailed
warnings in cigarette packages.

The new warnings are: Smoking is
Addictive; Tobacco Smoke Can
Harm Non-Smokers; Smoking Is A
Major Cause Of Stroke; and Smoking
Is The Major Cause Of Fatal Lung
Disease.
