CASTLEGAR NEWS, Thursday, October 15, 1959 INDIAN RESERVE LIFE ~ ‘Cows Went Out for a Beer’. Like any other race, the In- diuns are extremely proud of their ancestry. They admit their mistakes and shortcomings phil- osophically, but on the other hand they are afraid of complete assimilation. That was the Impression gained recently by Stan Standola, publisher of the Osoyoos Times, when he visited the Osoyoos In- dian Reserve in the company of Frank McDonald; manager of the South Okanagan Lands Project. Mn, Stanola continues: We called at the home of Chief Manuel Louie, now 87 years of age, and his wife Mar- garet, 88. We sat in the kit. chen of what would be a not- too-prosperous homestead. Also at home that morning was Farnces Louie, his wife and infant son. ‘To begin with, we found the Chief a gerat conversationalist. He would talk and talk, and go into the smallest detail of the subject. He, as well as Frances Loule, could express themselves very fully. The questions asked by Mr. McDonald and myself all received a direct answer. H.M.—that’s Heating Meagurement— The Chief does not believe the Indian Iquor laws should be made easier. The Indians cannot leave liquor alone, If he were permitted to bring a bottle home the could not‘ let it stand like a white man. “If he sees a bottle, it all must go.” Years ago thin reserve had about 3,000 head of cattle, and now only 800, The Chief blames: this on liquor. “All the cows went to the beer parlor,” he claims, He feels that all beer should be closed off. * The Indians elected their Chief and two council members who meet regularly to deal with Reserve matters, The present Chief was in office two years, | then voted out two years, and re- elected four years aga. Anyone over 21 years can vote, by a stand- ing vote, The Chief would like. to see the Indian children go to White schools, but he says the Indian Department will. not provide the buses, so the children are all sent to Mission schools at Cranbrook and Kamloops, Most of them stay away for the entire schoo! term. Some years ago here was a the sum of all the factors that affect the heating needs of your home. . Whatever the size or layout of your home, there’s an Esso Oil Heating unit which fite that tly—and in i with Esso Furnace Oil, it is your guarantee of "| over the reserve” the Chief said, much if a person drives through school on the Reserve and tan. thony Walsh did a splendid job, A new school was bullt about five years ago but never used. The Indians resent it belng locked up. They won't even let us use dt as a meeting hall, the Chief states. He was very proud of a young girl who had a good education at the Mission school and was planning to go on to further studles at Van- equver. i The Chief did not like a com- ing council meeting on a new Act. They want us to be white men, he feared, indicating that he would rather be left as now, He fears too much “bossing” from the Indian Agent, The Chief asked Mrs. Fair- clough recently about the $96,- 000,000 that the great Queen Victoria was supposed to have promised the Indians in 1890. He feels that his people have waited a long time but he has the pa- tience to keep. asking for it at every opportunity. The Indians have church ser- vice every first Sunday of the month, with a priest from Pen- ticton coming out, The church is usually filled up. This bullding was put up in 1912, but the 100 year-old church also still stands. Asked why the signs were put up to keep people off the Grove at Osoyoos, the Chief stated he was afrald of fire and | - * that the white people were too careless that way. They were algo dumping garbage. The Indian Agent wanted to arrange a 90-year lease at $26,000 a year for that property, but the Indians wanted only a five-year lease, | “No such thing as highway referring to a proposal for a right-of-way 100 feet wide. He just would hear nothing of it. One thing leads to ancther, with the usual result that the'size of the Reserve is always shrinking. ‘The Indian Reserve is about six miles wide and 22 miles long stretching from Osoyoos almost to Okanagan Falls on the east side of the river There are about 125 Indians on the Reserve, An Indian can be a private owner by fencing off a portion of this vast acreage. There are some who have done soe, but most do not bother — they choose to come and go without being tled down, even though such revenue would be their own. The Indians do not mind too the Reserve but they are very re- sure, safe, oil-heat comfort. Esso Heating Equipment is guaranteed by Imperial Oil and your Esso Heating Equipment dealer will gladly arrange easy budget terms— up to five years to pay. They are also quite put out ‘by the ROMP going on the Re- serve and arresting a person dri- ving without alicence. We'll get a lawyer and put a stop to this, the Chief asserted, If there is drunkeness, that is different, he added. During the two-hour talk, Frances Loule took a very keen and active part in the conversa- tion. We were suprised to learn that he had only finished grade two and said so. With a grin ho answered, aoe I’ve been around — but I had been educated I could fave handled all our problems.” en lifting up his infant son ietea on his be kness, he proudly salad “Wait till he grows up, he will learn” “This chap should be made Chief,” Mr. McDonald laughingly remarked. “We'll see,” the Chief an- swered with a big ‘friendly smile.
