Fires everywhere Castlegar Fire Chief Gerry Rempel says the number of call-outs the local department has had so far this month is bordering on the ridicu- lous, and someone had better start taking responsibility for their actions before major damage occurs. So far this month, the Castlegar Volunteer Fire Department has been called out to 14 different fires—11 of which have been caused by either human error or on . The latest call received by the local department is considered by Rempel to be the most serious. More than half an acre was consumed along the riverbank directly behind Woodland Park School, May 14, at approximately 3 p.m.. Due to the dry, dense brush Rempel called vehi- cles and firefighters from both north and south Castlegar departments. Conroy calls emergency meeting and India, just to name a few. Blessin said it appeared as if the fire, which occurred around 11 p.m, started when a sheet of plywood leaning against a hot steam pipe began smouldering, in turn igniting rubber belting on heavy timber walls. “It looked spectacular the same way that burning tires would look when they burn.” There might have been more damage, said Blessin, if not for the sprinkler system in the wood room.
