A synod of the Churchof England diocese in British Columbia will be held shortly, when many interesting questions will be discussed, the most interesting one being the en- Eargement of the clause of the di- @cesan canons under which female communicants of full age shall have fhe right to sit and vote in vestry. The proposal is by no means wevolutionary. “Old England” Ladies, otherwise qualified, have the wight to sit in vestry meetings while @here are increasing numbers of eases in rural districts of England aand Wales in which ladies of high Position and capacity have been chosen to serve and are now serving with general acceptance as church wardens. Here, however, it is pro- posed that ladies shall only sit and wote and not be qualified as lady delegates or wardens. Those sup- porting the movement say that as half the lay work of the church in British Columbia is done by women and that as theyJare i in the majority ms communicants, and more ‘relig- Hous than. men, they have every claim to attend the parish meetings wf their churches. WUBLIC OPINION, ‘Tue Nelson court house is the best sample of a cold storage pliant, if some of the churches are excepted, to be found in the Koote- mays. It is strange Hon. Fred ‘Hume has not brought the matter of better court commodations be- fore the legislature. Rossland, ssome of these days, will have a $40,000 court house, and $then the Judges, for the comfort of litigants, will order the majority of cases to be tried at that place. When Mr. Hume was asking tor the votes of the people, a few months ago, his friends pointed out the advantage efhaving acabinet minister from this district. If Nelson has profit- ed by Mr. Hnme's presence in the Cabinet, the circumstances has been so carefully obscured as to have escaped the observation of his ‘wonstituents here.—Nelson Econo- mist. . Hon. Jos. Martin arrived in town from Vancouver yesterday, says a Portage la Prairie despatch of the gth inst:, and leaves for Ottawa ‘Tuesday on supreme court business. Mr. Martin. refuses to discuss poli. |) -€ics, either federal or the coast, and is evidently awaiting developments. He did not know whether the liber- als would contest the next elections on the party lines of the federal poli- tics or not, or what would be made the issue. Neither would he say anything respecting the effect of the alien or eight-hour legislation. The only point upon which3JMr. Martin seemed to havea decided opinion was the defeat of the Semlin gov. ernment when the house meets. He will return from Ottawa and stop off at Portage in a couple of weeks, His business here is purely legal, and in connection with his property. —Exchange. Says That With Enlarged Plant It Will Pro duce 600 Tons Daily or 200,000 Tons a Year—To Pay Dividends, This is'the way the Montreal Her- ald discusses the recent Centre Star flotation: As the Centre Star has both the Le Roi and War Eagle veins run- aing into‘its property, the following facts concerning these two mines will enable one to form a fair idea as to the’ future possibilities of the Centre Star. The Le Roi has shipped up to the present time about "200,000 tons of ore, while the War Eagle, between 1894 dnd 1898, shipped 54,877 tons, yielding a net “profit of $936,971. The Centre Star has‘taken no ore out of its property-excepting what has been extracted‘in the course of develop- Even with its present lim- ited facilities the company can ship 200 tons-daily, or say 70,000 tons a year. With its enlarged plant this output can be increased to. 200,000 tons a_year. t A number.of leading mining ex- perts who have reported upon the Centre'Star, concur in the opinion that itis‘one of the great mining * properties of the world, and there is no question in their mind but” that itg:ore bodies may be counted upon to maintain their values, if not in- crease them, to a depth of at least with a profit of $12 per ton, would Provide this sum. The Cen- tre Star, however, even with its present small plant, and owing to it being a virgin mine with such immense ore bodies, can ship 200 tons of ore per day, or 70,000 tons per year. An enlarged plant is under construction, which will be completed by May next, when their shipments can be increased from g00 to 600 tons per day, or say 1§0,000to 200,000 tons per year. The Centre Star company is under contract to ship to the Trail smelter by the first of July, 1901, a mini- mum of 150,000 tons of ore. Going to the depot? Montana stables, for a gurney. The funeral will be from Lockhart & Jordan’s ‘undertaking parlors, and it is hoped Father Pat Irwin can reach here in time to officiate. The funeral will probably be in the new city cemetery. The: Le Roi, on its goo-foot level, finds its ‘ore values are maintained, . while in » the case’of the War Eagle, in its deepest level; at 750: feet, the ore has improved in value...’ Although the Le Roi is now work- ing. on its goo-foot level, and has already shipped 200,000 tons of ore, yet Mr. Carlyle, within the last few ‘weeks, has made the statement that : _, the work'so far done in that prop- s erty must be looked upon mainly as “developitig work, with: a. view of this: great property for the future, and‘that'the time is ap- proaching when more and even larger dividends ‘will’be a by the ‘company. i ‘The Le Roi company~ is " capital = ized Yat 61,000,000.
