8-Trail Times-Friday, December 12, 1980 RECREATJ willl ~ry Pepper The hockey game last night against Grand Forks Border Bruins was unique in at least one thing, it was a first in that it was televised on the local station; from there on it was a simple repetition of what has been happening to the Rossland hockey team all winter. After last night's game it seems apparent that the Warriors will have to concentrate on the game of hockey and take everything else, including some pretty shabby calls by the official in charge of the game, in their stride. Last night everything was going along swimmingly until a Rossland player was given a penalty, his reaction to the call was to make some remarks to the referee and right away he has a misconduct. Ten minutes, plus the automatic two, sees him sit out 14 minutes, well into the second period, when another RQssland player gets another two minutes. He responded with a little pantomine and bingo! He's gone for fourteen so for eight minutes they play a man short and for 20 minutes the coach must juggle lines to take up the slack. When they did get their act together the team looked as if they might possibly pull it out but the Grand Forks' Billick and McNabb, backed by a sterling effort by their netminder, Barry Arishenkoff, had the game pretty well in hand by that time. I am looking forward to seeing the re-run of the game on TV Channel 10 and all the local comment from play-byplay man Arnie Sherwood. I guess it was a first for Arnie and a lot of his guests, should make for entertaining listening. The result of last night's game was a blow to the Rossland fans who really believed the boys had something going when they knocked off Nelson last Friday. That however, is the way things are going with the Warriors this winter. At times they look like champions and then again they play like chumps. Taking offence at an official's calls is OK, but giving vent to sarcasm in the wake of such calls only digs the hole a little deeper. The Border Bruins scored five of their seven goals last night on power plays while the Warriors never converted on one of theirs. They did score a short-handed goal, the prettiest of the night, but not too many of these come up in the average game. The boys go to Cranbrook Saturday and to Grand Forks the following Wednesday before their next home game against Kimberley on the 19th, and after a game in Creston on the 20th some of our boys from out of town will be leaving for home and for holidays with their folks. We hope they will enjoy themselves and· come back prepared to do or die for dear old Rossland. rather play before supper than after. He said any curlers from Rossland, not already in a club, would be welcomed. The retirees are winding down their opening competition and rinks have been drawn for the second round to start early in January. The rinks of Norm Harry and George Dyson are leading the way at present and we can look for some pretty radical changes in this in the New Year. The new hotel in Rossland is experiencing roofing problems, it is not quite clear yet as to what is causing the difficulty but it is to be hoped that it will be corrected before too long. A structure of that magnitude can ill afford problems of this nature; there is just too much beauty on the inside to have it ruined by a leaky roof. Backtohockey,Arnietells me that Channel 10 is going to do quite a number of hockey games to be televised during the coming months. I don't know whether this is ' going to be such a boon to junior hockey in this area, fan attendance is pretty poor right now and televising games may not be the answer to improving it. Sure, the exposure to the public has to do something for the game, but I hope it doesn't encourage people to stay home from the games knowing that they can see them later on the tube. If and when you do get to watch last night's game on TV look especially sharp for a couple of Rossland's biggest hams doing their stuff for the benefit of the cameras. First, you have to see Desi tipping his hat as he drove by on the ice-cleaning machine while Arnie wa interviewing Bart Carnaratta, From the curling world then look for Irv Martin as The hockey game last night against Grand Forks Border Bruins was unique in at least one thing, it was a · first in that it was televised on the local station; from there on it was a simple repetition of what bas been happening to the Rossland hockey team all winter.
