AS I SEE IT. WITH HARRY PEPPER Replying to an invitation from Lou DeRosa, I attended the first annual West Kootenay Senior Baseball League banquet which was held in the Kootenay Hotel in Trail last Saturday night. I understand that invitations went out to all clubs in the league and all the news media, however, the only clubs represented were the Trail Silver Kings and the Rossland Capi lanos and the only news people were Burt Decaire ofCJATand myself. Rather a poor show on the part of Nelson and Grand Forks clubs and also the local press. But as Lou said in his remarks from the chair, this is something new and maybe from a slow start it could develop into something pretty big given a little time and some more publicity. Representing the Silver Kings were batting champion, Al Doherty, Rob Patterson, Keith Healey and Dale Payette along with their wives or girl bigger and better. On my way to the cafeteria at work recently I chanced to meet former Smokie hockey , and East Trail soccer great, Jimmy Morris . " Harry ," said Jimmy , " I saw something this summer you'd give a hundred bucks to see anytime," Jimmy went on to tell me he saw the man acclaimed as the world 's greatest soccer player , Brazil 's peerless Pele, and that it was quite an experience. I can only say this , Jimmy , I sure envy you . That' s one thing I'd sure like to do some time . I dropped in to see the Junior Warriors on Tuesday evening friends. and for my first look at the Attending on behalf of the squad in pr~ctice I was someCapilanos were chairman Lou what impressed . The Wish Milburn trophy for the league championship was taken by the Nelson Indians , who bad no one there to accept it, the Mount Baker Trophy , emblematic of the playoff champions was accepted by Rich Miller on behalf of the Capilanos , the league batting champion as I said before was Al Doherty and for his winning .447 effort Al was awarded a new trophy named for that staunch old Nelson baseball man, Frank Hufty . Lou had some kind words for Mr . Hufty who came through with a substantial financial contribution to the Labor Day cause when things were looking a little gloomy to say the least. While on the subject of baseball I would like to offer. my congratulations to Lou, Richie Miller and Al Richards all of whom passed through a coaching school recently to become recognized as qualified baseball coaches anywhere in B.C. Thanks! Lou , for inviting me to the do. It was very good and I hope it will continue to get On the forward lines , McLellan was using Jim Stuart at centre with Mike Evans and Ken Bertoia on the wings . John Stanton had Rick Rosse and doug Jones banking him. His brother, Gary was working with Savinkoff and Henne, two Castlegar youngsters . And a fourth line saw Ray Dunn centring Ernie Jacobsen and Mike McCormack. This team could turn out to be a pleasant surprise to Rossland fans when the 1971- 72 season opens tonight with the young braves going against Grand Forks . This will be followed by the Saturday night game against the highly rated Cranbrook squad and Tuesday next the Junior Smokies and this year' s edition of the Warriors will meet head-on . Jim Markle, Minor Hockey prexy told me that registrations will be opened again at the City Hall tonight from 7 to 8 p.m . So, boys ! You now have another chance to join up and play hockey in Rossland 's minor league set- up this winter.
