Fitness Week-Hearl Month And What It is All About By Dr. John Walton Recently it has been shown that people who are physically fit are less liable to suffer. from heart disease than those who are not fit. This is one reason a Fitness Weck is being held in conjunction with Heart Month. If you are physically fit you will be able to perform a repetitive exercise such as running or swimming without + undue shortness of breath and fatigue. This type of fitness is commonly termed aerobic fit- ness or cardiorespiratory fit- ness because it is the ability of your heart and lungs to deliver oxygen to your muscles that determines your level of fit- ness. If you are fit your heart and lungs can deliver a lot of oxygen to your muscles which will allow you to. exercise, without undue fatigue. Most Canadians have a low level of fitness because they do not habitually get any strenous exercise. The purpose of the fitness testing station at the high school is to point out to people that they are not physically fit and to encourage them to undertake an exercise program, To accurately. measure your level of fitness it would be necessary to exercise to ex- haustion and then to measure the amount of oxygen you consumed. This requires soph- isticated equipment and is not feasible on large numbers of people. At the fitness — testing station those wishing «to be tested will exercise for a set period of time and by measur- ing their pulse after the exercise an estimate of their maximal oxygen uptake can be make. An easy test that you can do on: your, own: to test your : by walking and running for 12 minutes: less than one mile, very::poor; one mile to 1,24 miles, poor; 1.25 miles to 1,49 miles, fair; 1.5 miles to 1,74 miles, ¢good; and 1.75-plus miles, excellent. If you are out of shape it is not wise to atlempl this test without. a period of. ‘prior training. What should you do if you are not fil? The. answer, of course, is to exercise. The most valuable aerobic exercises are. walking, running, cycling and swimming. The exercise should be done regularly, preferably three or four limes a week in order to get a training effect. The exercise should begin gradually and the intensity and duration, should . slowly be’: increased as your fitness improves, For example, walk- ing four miles in one hour four. limes a week, or. running 1.5 . miles in 11 minutes four times a week will maintain a-good level of aerobic fitness. Exercise programs which gradually built up to these levels of fitness will be available | at the testing station, Start walking, running or cycling today. Even though everything isn’t finished yet, the.claims centres not completed, the computers not fully operational, the mounds of papers not yet all » sorted, AUTOPLAN is, working. It's working | because of the dedicated people ‘at [CBC who are doing the. superhuman task of creating fhe largest insurance company in the country, and we're doing it because we ‘believe in this province. : The people at ICBC are very glad that we've been able to do this in one year.
