VIN 341 — 365-7292 JOHN MUNDAY'S ‘FAMILY’ The following is the second part of a letter from missionary-teacher John Munday of Quito, Ecuador in which he describes his.“family” of some 30 strays’ and orphans at’ his: Diospaj Nan Christian ‘Centre. LUIS P is a fairly recent arrival and one of my two epilepties. He is 15 years old but because of an i and “mi " has only. reached Grade 4. I'm still trying to figure out how to educate him, and in the meantime am grateful for every. sign. of improvement in his overall conduct. He is the product of another “single mother”-stepfather situation, and needs an extra amount of love and discipline and guidance. LUIS W, like Gilberto, is a Shuar Indian boy from deep in the eastern jungle. Unlike Gilbbberto, although they are the best of friends. Luis is high-strung, moody, often violent. When he was very small his father tried to kill his mother who complained of her husband's infidelity. The mother escaped and has not been seen again. ‘Tiny Luis hid in the house for several hours or days until a neighbor lady found him and took him under her wing. Not long after, through troubles of her own, she committed suicide. Luis was found by a missionary. priest and shipped ‘to:a big boys’ school in the coastal city of Guayaquil. During a recreation period of unsupervised soccer somebody sent a ball smashing into Luis’ face. Almost immediately he went completely blind. He became a ward of the Red Cross. Eventually, at the request of the Mother Superior of the blind school in Quito, he became my ward. This year he graduates from Primary School (at 17) and may or may not continue on to high school. Hectr is the youngest of my first four “foster children.” His-mother Rose, still a young Christian, was dying from cancer when I promised her I'd care for her four small children should the Lord choose to call her to His presence. Because of her unfaithful and often cruel husband she was very concerned forthe well-being of Waldo, Rodolfo, Norma and Hector (Norma was the oldest). She was relieved when I assured her I would look after them. I think it was in March of 1976, my first night here on the line of the Equator, when I was advised by phone that Rose had just died. I was getting into bed around 10 p.m., but didn't quite make it. Instead, I backed up, dressed again, drove into Quito, bought Rosa a coffin in the old part of town, made the trip to Rosa's tiny apartment half way up Mount Pichincha and made arrangements for the wake, the funeral and the interment. Almost overnight after almost half a century I became a father. Hector was eight years old at the time. He’s now a husky 17-year-old, shows a genuine love for the Lord Jesus, and plans to attent technical school in Quito this coming October. John Charters... . Reflections, & recollections Robert is my 18-year-old Shuar Ipdian boy. who paid in advance. for the privilege of living here (with Gilberto and Anibal) with a bundle of spears and a jaguar’s skull. He couldn't make it through this year's studies, so is working here as a willing chore-boy until I can arrange for him to attent night classes. He has a natural and deep-rooted worry that he may be losing his sight. Apparently there is nothing wrong, but at his request, I am extra-liberal with the eye-drops. I can empathize with his concern. Jose is an albino boy of 18, recommended to me_by the Blind Institute where he is studying: He is from the western jungle but has nowhere else to stay while attending special classes in Quito. He was saddened last __week by the death of his mother, and some months before that was chocked to learn that his uncle had swallowed industrial alcohol and immediately lost the sight of both eyes. The uncle was with us for a while, but the separation from his wife and small children in the jungle was too much for him to take. He is now back wtih them. Fernando was raised in government homes and orphanages, and much of his past is still.a mystery. He was recommended to me by a young doctor friend, a Christian, who literally pleaded with me to take him in. Fernando is a Black Belt champion in karate and the youngest of 22 Ecuadorians to win that honor. He has represented Ecuador in several Latin American countries and gives classes at the university, though in his academic studies (in the neighboring town of Pomasqui) he is only in Grade 10. Fernando was baptized last year and until .recently when he felt he ‘needed more experience in the Christian life, was one of the Sunday School teachers here at “Diospaj Nan.” _ Victor was introduced to me about six years ago by a missionary friend after he'd accepted Christ as his Savior and Lord in a big evangelistic campaign in Quiot. Later he came back on his own and pleaded with me to give him a home. I insisted we contact his mother who worked as a maid in a wealthy home in Quito. She, too, asked me to take him under my wing for she was unable to “cope.” I soon learned that this poor women was mother to half a dozen or more children, ‘most of them fathered by different men, and did desperately need help if her progeny were to amount to anything. And so Victor, and later Luis, were added to my ‘family. Victor is now 21, and is studying French at the Catholic University and English at the British Embassy. He longs to continue his studies in English in Canada and wants me to publicize his..dream. He’s an excellent student, and was elected president of the stiident council at San Antonio High School the year before he graduated with flying colors. He is also interested in biology, and everything he touches flourishes (if it is flora) and reproduces (if it is fauna). At regular intervals he presents me with a new family of pups or of kittens, and last week built a handsome apartment for our sevén hamsters. Victor is also baptized and active in our Sunday school and growing assembly. ~ Angel came to Quito some years ago for an operation on his eyes in the hopes of restoring his failing sight. The operation was not successful, and Angel's disappointment and frustration.at not being able to see kept him from returning to his home with the Shuar Indians deep in the eastern jungle. Since then until now he has been livingwith anyone that would take him in or share a room. Miguel. my oldest at 29, is a pathetic physical specimen. Blind from an adverse reaction to anti-malarial quinine when he was four years old, his family, it seems, tended to overprotect him. He is my second epileptic, but both he and Luis P., are suffering from less attacks since I've started (as of many, many months ago) giving their appropriate medication each meal time. Left on their own they tend to forget. Miguel's speech is becoming so garbled it's often impossible to understand him. He no longer walks, but rather shuffles along like a very, very old man, or a very, very small child just learning how to walk. I've taken him to a Christian paychiatist, =who. suspects Miguel's gression to have a psy | cause, but first wants me to have him “electr-encephalogrammed.” It’s not that I've been deliberately negligent. Time has been filled with too many things and responsibilities. Perhaps this week I'll get to what should be a No: 1 priority. Then we'll know if there is hope for Mguel’s improvement. After writing the preceding biographies, a represen- tative of one of the judges of the Juvenile Court drove in with two more small boys to add to our family. I was reluctant to receive them. but. they were so_pathetic- looking I did not have the heart to refuse: In brief their ‘stories are as follows: Ubaldo approximately nine years old, is another of Ecuador's many abandoned children, has an IQ of 79 and possible brain damage, talks very softly and very little, yet is very affectionate, timid and somtimes incoherent. He has several sores that need medical attention. Roberto Morocho (?) is, perhaps, 10 years old, and was found abandoned near a public market. He was so beaten up that it is believed he was run over. He was bleeding from the mouth, his jaw was broken, and several teeth were either broken or knocked out altogether. He is extremely retarded with an IQ of 42 and a mental age of four. He is so skinny I suspect him to be filled with parasites. He has a phenomenal appetite, and scoops up the leftover food following meals to fill up all his real or imagined vacancies. Just about anything, no matter how filthy, goes into his mouth. He also is destructive and needs constant observation. I suspect I've taken on more than I can chew. If it proves to be an impossible task, I'll turn him back to the authorities.
