ter said. “They feel like
they’d be lowering them-

“But I feel I still can play
and want to let people know
I'm here. I'm here creating

Foster, the highest-paid
player in 1986 at $2 million,
was released by the New
York Mets in midseason and,
after signing with the Chi-
cago White Sox, was later
dropped by them.

At 38, Foster batted a
combined .225 with 14 home
runs, putting him 38th on the
all-time homer list with 348.

Worrall gets used to changes

TORONTO (CP) — Jim Worrall has seen many changes
in his 50-year involvement with the Olympic Games and
admits he's had to make “persona! adjustments” to get used
to some of them.

“We are heading for open Games and if that's what the
world of sports wants, I certainly won't crusade against it,”
says Canada's representative on the International Olympic
Committee.

At age 72, Worrall, all six-foot-five of him, is full of
bounce and energy. He still puts in a full day on
Olympic-related chores, including work on revisions to the
Olympic charter, its rules and bylaws.

Worrall has been at every Summer Olympics since 1936
— when he competed in the Berlin Games — and every
Winter Games since 1964. He went to a committee meeting
in Moscow in 1980 — the year most western countries
including the United States and Canada boycotted the
Games — but left the day the Olympics started.

“I thought the boycott was foolish,” he reflects. “It had
no effect on the war in Afghanistan and we kept selling the
Russians wheat and they kept selling us Lada cars.”

NEVER TOP POST

At one time it was thought Worrall would become
president of the committee, which would have made him the
most powerful person in world amateur sports.

“No, I honestly am not disappointed that I wasn't made
president,” he says. “When I see how hard he (the president)
works, I just wouldn't have the energies to face all the
problems.”

Preofessional athletes, forbidden in the past from
taking part in the Olympics, will be eligible to compete in the
next Games in 1988 based on rules set out by each sporting
federation.

And professional hockey players will be allowed to
compete, a decision made at a recent meeting Worrall
attended in Lausanne, Switzerland.

“It was inevitable but it’s rather sad to see the old
criteria go. But I'm not going to join Slavery Brundage as he
whirls in his grave.”

GIVE BACK CAR

When he was Olympics president, for 20 years until
1972, Brundage insisted on adherence to strict amateur
rules. He earned the nickname Slavery Brundage when it
was reported he ordered Canadian skater Barbara Ann
Scott to return a car that the city of Ottawa had given her
after she won the world figure skating championship.
Worrall says Brundage had only suggested she give it back
as it might prevent her from taking part in the Olympics.

Worrall says the current president, Juan Antonio
Samaranch of Spain, believes the best athletes in the world
should compete, regardless of professional or amateur
standing.

“['ve had to make personal adjustments because, of
course, I remember when we used to have to buy even our
own shoes,” says the former track-and-field Olympian
“Today all the athletes have great funds of money and you
have to wonder if the money really is in trust when you see
their big houses and cars.”

Fishing Report

Although it hasn't been a great week of fishing on the
Lower Arrow Lake a number of Dolly Varden catches have
been reported at Scottie’s Marina by a number of Castlegar
fishermen.

Roy Percival had two three-pounders, Wilf Sweeney
caught a two-pound fish, Tom Batchelor caught two
five-pounders, Richard Stoochnoff caught a six-pound fish
and John Stoochnoff had one weighing three pounds.

Under previous rules, Worrall would have had to retire
this year when he reached age 72, but that was changed
recently to 75. “I didn’t instigate it but I didn't struggle
against it,” he says with a laugh

The use of drugs by athletes is one thing Worrall has
not been able to adjust to.

“The use of drugs is a very deplorable state of affairs.
The closest we ever came to it in my day was occasionally an
athlete would have a hangover and we used to take an
Aspirin tablet.

“But as long as players or especially coaches think they
canfind an extra few inches, the temptation will be there.”

Worrall was in Germany more than a year ago and
revisted the stadium where he had competed in the 110- and
400-yard hurdies at the 1936 Olympics. “It certainly brought
back memories,” he says from his memento-crowded office
at York University’s Ontario Sports Centre

He recalls how popular the Canadian athletes were with
the Germans — the Canadian Olympic salute is to hold the
right arm out in front of you, just like the notorious “Heil
Hitler” salute.

That, of course, was the year famed U.S. track star
Jesse Owens stole the show and was said to have been
snubbed by Adolf Hitler because he was black. Worrall says
that is a “media myth” because Owens hadn't even won a
medal until Hitler had left the stands. “Jesse told me himself
Hitler never even had the opportunity of meeting him.”
