Delays anger environmentalists ° OTTAWA _(CP)_— Ottawa is. breaking a promise made in the federal green plan to eliminate toxic dioxin and furan pollution from pulp and paper mills by 1994, environ- mentalists say. They are angfy at the announ- cement by Industry Minister Benoit Bouchard last week that some pulp and paper. mills will get an extra two years to comply with new pollution regulations, which have been in the works since 1989. **1 think it’s outrageous,"’ said Bill Andrews of the West Coast En- vironmental Law Association, based in Vancouver. Andrews said the government has caved into pressure from the pulp and paper industry. ‘The name of the game for the pulp industry is delay.” Dioxins and furans are byproducts of the bleaching process used in many pulp and paper mills. Scientists say they contribute to the risk of cancer and birth defects in humans, although controversy over the degree of risk continues. Large areas of British Columbia coastal waters are closed to commer- cial shellfish harvesting because of dioxin and furan contamination from pulp mills. LOOK TO US FOR. New Democrat MP Jim Fulton, his party’s environment critic, called for the resignation of Environment Minister Robert de Cotret. “How can minister de Cotret remain in office after.
