Superintendant Fellows, of the Water & Light company, informed a Recorp man last evening that the top had been taken off the old flume and .the ice cut out from one end to the other and that that water would be turned into the reaervoirs today. ‘As soon aa the supply can be relied upon it will be tarned on all over the city. Mr. Fellows explained that the: flume was not frozen up the entire length as was generally sapposed, but only in exposed places. The people will be rejoiced at the Prospects of having city water again. In view of the etatemefts made around town as to their bejog no hikeh- hood of having water before the spring thaw, and the complairts of citizens about tho water being shot off, Chair- man Lalonde, of the board oi works, in the absence of the chairman Qi the water and light committee chairman, and Alderman Goodeve, went out;yester- day and inspected. the pipe from the res- ervoir foot to the head of the flame. They found the line in such a condi- tion as to warrant them sending out a large body of men to put the flume in sha pe to bring water to town, a8 goon as possible. So 50 men and the euperintendant of city streets McCraney were sent out this morningearly to assist thé water com- pany’s forces already there, and it is be- lieved that the flume can be gotten .in- to shape co that the water.can be turned on tonight. If not‘a’ call for 60 moré citizens will be made to assist in getting the flume completed. T. Mr. Clifford, one of the members ‘of Cassiar, during his ‘speech, waa interup- ted by the attorney-general and warmly rebuked that gentlemen for his discourt- esy-in seeking to embrace a’ new mem- ber in his first. address tothe house. He regretted, too, that his firat addreas should. deal with so. unworthy.an at- tempt'as this, on the part of the govern- ment; to legislate a supporter into the house: “Mr. Clifford’s address and his to: the ge 1. are particularly intereating because he has heen claimed by the government. presa as an'independent supporter. Mr. Turner’s protest ” againet Mr. Deane, one ‘of the “members mentioned in the bill, which.declares him entitled to set for this “session, vot- ing tor it, as hé is-directly interested, but the speaker overruled the objection, | holding that Mr. Dean’s intereat is pub- lic and not-private, ~~ The house remained in Committee’ for the rest of the afternoon. session, and algo after recess, nominally. discussing the first section of the Dill, All the speeches wero from the opposition side, no’ members supporting the government rising to defend. the bili, which fact caused the opposition to point out that it was to be carried by mere force of nuinbers, Atmidnight no force what- ever had béen made.
