It is stated that Mr. Hollis was the bearer of friendly dispatches from the United States’ government, urging Mr. Kruger to treat for Petce. an : Privoners Held us Moxtaxes London, June 8,—The driblets of news filtering from the Transvaal fail to {row much light on the sit- uation fn-and around Pretoria. Public interest centers largely in the fate of the British prisoners, but it séems- probable that about 3500 have been recovered, includ- ing129 officers.~ The federals, therefore, have removed about a thousand as hostages. Consul Hollls? Special to the Kecord, Victoria, June 8.—Mr. Martin did not refer at all in his speeches last night to the-allegations in affidavits that Hill was furnishing a campaign fund. He continues in denial. He had a narrow escape from be- ing rotten-egged at Esquimalt last night. A number of men were awaiting his coming with eggs, and Martin left early, when they were not expecting him to go, and he thus escaped. RESULT TOMORROW NICHT The Arrangements in Rossland and Other Points in the Riding—Number of Candidates Nominated By Each Party in the Province. The talking is over and tomor-. “row the voting will take place to de- cide whether the people of British Columbia want Martin’s one-man rule or wish to restore. government by the people. The work of the or- ators is done and that of the work- er at the polls has begun. Both committees in this riding are hard at work with the appointment of in- side and outside scrutineers. The members of Gov. Mackintosh’s committee will hold their final meet- ing to make their arrangements and map out the work at 8 o'clock this evening. The meeting will be held on the second fluor of the old Bank of Montreal building. In Rossland, it is estimated that from 950 to 1000 votes will be cast. In this and other incorporated cities to 7:30 p. m.; in all other places, © from 8a.m.to 5p.m. As there place in the Rossland riding, the re- turns should be in and, the result known early in the evening.” Every conveyance of any ‘kind, not only in Rossland but - in - Trail, Grand Forks, Greenwood and other towns will be.brought into requisi- tion to take voters to the polls and a full vote is expected. Thé legislature is composed of 38 members. Candidates on the ‘Mar- tin platform have been put up for 32 seats, including W. W. B. Mc- Innes in North Nanaimo, whom Mr. Martin claims as a supporter. But Mr. Martin himself is a candi- date in both Victoria and Vancou- ver and Hon. J. S. Yates in both Victoria and Nanaimo City. This reduces the number of Martin can- didates to 30. In opposition to him there have been nominated 18 bers of the old opposition, or Turner party; 20 straight Conserv- atives; 11 members of the Provin- cial, or Cotton, party. There are also seven independents and six la- bor candidates, who are understood to be ready to co-operate with any party in forming a majority in the legislature to carry on the govern- ment, provided they. can dictate the policy on certain measures in which they are interested. But the labor candidates led by Ralph Smith have taken issue so directly with Mr. Martin that the chances of theic supporting him are very small, even should he have enough supporters to make a majority with their aid. Mrs, Grenier Makes Open War. A long-standing quarrel between Mrs. Grenier and Mrs. Tremblay culminated the other day in open war when the two women met at the house of Mrs..
