The passages from his book, The Horseman of Shandro Cross- ing, were also moving and funny as they told of the loneliness of the early Ukrainian immigrants to the Prairies and their ways of coping with it The warmth and humanity of the writing brought tears to my eyes as well as Chapman's. When Vernon Frolick stood up to give his reading, he was also in tears and laughing at the same time about the Kupchenko family habit of bawling in public As Crown prosecutor in Pen- ticton, he confessed, he often cries when presenting details of a lot of cases! We could believe it, Reading from Descent into Madness, he gave a spellbinding account of Michael Oros's crazy flight from reality, resulting in the murder of a trapper. Const. Mike Buday died as an RCMP. SERT team attempted to pick up Oros, knowing he was a very dangerous psychopath. An eerie malfunction of Oros's gun prevented the death of another police officer and Oros himself was shot The diaries of Michael Oroso revedled him to be a sensitive and imaginative writer; while reading them, Vernon Frolick managed to see into his soul and pity the derangement which wrought such tragedy As a friend of Buday, Frolick was unable to read. the passages covering his death. We all had lumps in our throats as we lis- tened to the parts he could read; the wondrous descriptions of the intense silence of the frozen North and the brilliance of the Stars, or the suspense of the snowmobiliers’ approach to their cabin, wondering if Oros was inside, aiming a gun at them. This strange case will become a legend in Canadian legal history as it contains such surreal elements; week. SUN STAFF PHOTO / Ron Norman case to the jury, and thus wins a and it may become a movie. Approximately 30 area artists have lent their talents to this cause, including Robson's Dar McDowell, who created a table runner using mirror to display a spring snowdrop flower. HEALTH WORKSHOP SAYS ent injection SUN STAFF PHOTO /Karen Kerkhoft Street drug nurse needed KAREN KERKHOFF Sun Staff ANKORS, the West Koote- nay/Boundary AIDS Network outreach and support society has applied for funding to hire a street drug nurse for the West Kootenay. The nurse would travel between Castlegar, Trail and Nel- son and would be responsible for needle exchange, testing for HIV, hepatitis, sexually transmitted diseases and other associated high-risk activities. Local public health nurse Cindy Talarico said a recent intravenous pain use workshop which dis- cussed risky behavior drew some startling conclusions. “There is illegal injection drug use in our communities. It has been an increasing issue, We do have concerns around that.” Through the workshop, partic- ipants were able to determine that there are at least 36 injection drug users in the Castlegar, Trail and Nelson area, as well as “casual users” Despite the distance from maior cities such as Vancouver id Calgary, been a lack of information shar- ing in the helping community. Talarico said the workshop was valuable in that there has Telephone customers in > Siocan will no longer pay Jong distance charges on calls to Vallican. B.C.
