continued from page B3 Thad no idea of how wealthy I was until now — it almost alone makes the miserable experi- ence worth the effort. Personal observations and projections are more difficult to summarize and record since the illness affected both the physical and the inner man and therefore the related social and psychological outlook. In fact I had begun to take the endless torrent of media reports of murder, rape, rapine, greed and self-interest as a mirror of the true world and found it a pret- ty depressing one. Everywhere there was confrontation rather than cooperation, noisy demands for the equal- ity of “oranges and grapefruit” (or equivalents) with the promis- bidden night walk to the washroom ended with an abrupt encounter with the floor and three stitches in my scalp. A bonus to.the incident was one of the most unusual, technicolor en- counters with a lady whom I called “La Belle Dames de La Rive” in a dream-not-a-dream. But that is another story. Sleep continues to elude me but even in the long, dark hours there is a pay-off as imagina- tion races free. A few days ago I prepared a lit- tle item called The Masochist’s Menu: (a com- pletion test). For example: “He was mad with jealously and ate his (heart) out.” “He was overcome with anger and chewed his (beard) off.” es that some ani- Last night, it mals are more “J had no idea of how wealthy I was until now was a long con- equal than oth- ers —asnarling, hidden agenda, — it almost makes the miserable experience worth the effort.” sideration of the paradox of free will in a uni- If-seeking nas- tiness. It was profoundly depressing to one who sees the world, and particularly the human condi- tion, in the Chinese symbol of the Yin-Yang uni- versal principal of mutually supporting, com- plementary relationships. We cannot escape the fact that we are forever a part of all creation as well as part of all our experiences. In consequence of my malaise I was “seeing through a glass (very) darkly” indeed. I was, therefore in my mind, not ill but overtired, pos- sibly badly organized, a fly in the web of bu- reaucracy, and the last place I needed was a hospital. I entered with two dark heel marks stretching out behind me. Consequences have been quite-the opposite of expectations. I discovered that contrary to current propaganda the feminine vaniversal is alive and well here. J My lifelong romance with the distaff side of the world has in consequence blossomed in the warm family atmosphere of this hospital. A very good feeling, particularly so, since a for- verse of struc- tured chaos. The trouble is I’m never wide enough awake to get my thoughts on paper and by dawn they are in tatters. Probably just as well. Best of all, this particular experience has brought me face to face with the fact of my own mortality and the fact that no male Charters has ever beaten that last decade. Much has been done in concert with others, much remains to be done alone. This round I listen to all my good friends.
