cs CASTLEGAR NEWS, Thursday, August 23, 14/9 You’re the future By FRED MERRIMAN Dear Danny, | know you drive a Spider Monza and | am sure you are driving the girls crazy with your handsome gocd looks. You have time on your side, therefore | would like to take this opportunity to advise you that you have a beautiful, powerful tiger by the tall. That tiger, complete with stripes, has enough energy and potential to turn this spinning world around backwards or upside down. That tiger | shall name ‘The Future." | am speaking to you because | think that you and others like you don't know that you are at the controls of much more than just a Spider Monza. All | could do was dream of having a hot car. You have one. All | could do was dream about driving the girls crazy. For you It Is all a reality. : Yes, | wanted to have things, right now. | wanted the fresdom to do as | pleased at a time which was convenient to me. | was unable to do so. My parents forbade such self-centered behavior and most Importantly neither myself nor my parents could afford It. However, it Is differant with you. What can a twenty-year-old do with $24,000 a year when he's atill living at home? You could get married and that would bring the pay cheque down to slze. Why do that when you have a traplino that keeps you jumping like a kid In a candy store? | know a young man In Kelowna who had to decide between a hot car and marriage. He opted for the hot car and still has money In the bank. What | am trying to say, man, Is that you have it made and a lot of us old fogeys are watching you carefully to see how you use your youth, money and freedom. Some of us may be suffering from a twinge of jealousy or a twinge of regret that we were born In a Depression and had to live through a time of war and ratloning. f i E School was a tlme of preparing for the military. | knew more about the firepower of a Spitfire than | did about the latest hot car. So we are all rather Interested to see how you handle yourself because you are the future. Enjoy yourself while you can, but please give some thought to the future when you make your decision to ‘‘over enjoy.’’ It reminds me again of the war when the word “‘overkill'? was bandied about. bam concerned that you will not realize how fortunate you are, wallowing in the fruits of your predecessors efforts. Your predecessors may become more than Jealous — they may become angry. If they do, and when they become so yourself. irritated that they begin bringing down stifling legislation that curtails your . freadom to do as you please, then you know you have gone too far. ‘ We are counting on you to have a goal which wil! not only help you but just might be designed to help others, particularily those who are less fortunate than” Camp Rory: the ideal setting for unforgettable summers Guiding Release To most young people, the end of June means the beginning of the summer holidays.
