PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Approximately 30 years bt Allen Tate spoke to the entering class of the University
of Minnesota. His message is still appropriate today. Briefly, he stated that the purpose of
education is the discipline of the mind for its own sake through the mastery of basic subjects
dealing with language and numbers. in mastering these topics he will know himself and un-
derstand his relation to the world.

It's the job of the class valedictorian to share with you some of the ideas and
emotions we are feeling at graduation. To do this | tried to define what a typical grad was,
