First on the agenda this
week comes from my old pal
in Penticton, Chow S<tao.
Chow sends along a clipping
from a Winnipeg paper of an
obituary column on the
passing of a former
Rossland and Trail athlete.
He says that the name will
mean a lot to most older
people in our cities as Ross
Forrest was quite an athlete.
Forrest played quite a
number of sports and excelled in most of them.
S<tao also mentioned that
he was with Ross when they
were stationed in the
Beaumont barracks in
Aldershot and they played
softball with some other
Rossland men at that time
with a team known as McTeer's Sports. Among the
Rosslanders mentioned were
Clyde Nyman, who can be
found any day now burning
up the Birchbank course
with his trusty golf clubs,
John Gydinski and Frank
Thorpe. The team's coach
was Alec Pollock.
I ran into Dave Lawrence
in the Uplander the other
day and he tells me that he is
helping organize an Oldtimers' soccer team in
Rossland to take part in a
league encompassing most
of the West Kootenay. Dave

mentioned teams from Trail,
Castlegar, Grand Forks,
Fruitvale, Nelson and Kaslo
along with Rossland. They
aim for membership to be
restricted to the ~and-over
group and practice every
Thursday in Sunningdale.
The regular league play is
expected to start this
weekend.
Another clipping handed to
me in Trail recently is from
the Vancouver Sun sports
reporter, Mike Mooney, and
it deals with the exploits of
one of Trail's favorite sons.
Mike Buckna is a household
word in the Kootenays as
well as being hailed as the
"father of Czech hockey" in
the clipping. My best
memories of Mike are of him
playing alongside Ab Cronie
for the Smoke Eaters,
coaching the Rossland
Warriors and being a genial
host at his hotel in the Gulch
during my early years in
Trail. His ability to organize
certainly paid handsome
dividends for the Czech
hockey cause.
I wish to thank Fanny Albo
for the following report on
women's curling. This deals
with the women who curl
during the afternoon as
compared to the evening

club, which I understand has
a larger membership.
Both of these clubs are
endeavoring to promote the
cause of women's curling
and this column wishes both
nothing but success in their
efforts.
The afternoon club held its
windup banquet at the
Uplander recently with 21
members present. Also on
hand were three guests, all
former members, Marg
Burnett, Peggy Smith, and
Laura Vanness. After the
banquet a short business
meeting was held and a slate
of officers for 19&'3-34 was
announced by Dorothy Albo.
The new slate consisted of
president-elect Vivian
Thompson, vice-president
Irene Brennan, secretary
Irene Dunlop, treasurer
Ruth Dougan, bonspiel
chairman Jan Westbury,
social director Jessie
Skinner, press representative Beryl Davies and zone
chairman Marg Rosse.
Winners of the four
competitions · undertaken by
the club this winter for the
Cominco shield were Fanny
Albo with Dorothy Fines the
runner up. In the mini-draw,
those two rinks reversed
their positions with Dorothy
winning and Fanny taking

second place. In the Seccombe Cup, Irene Brennan
emerged victorious with
Dorothy Albo second and in
the Haden-Capalbo trophy it
was Dorothy Albo on top
with Edie Harasin next.
The rinks in the HadenCapalbo were, with Dorothy,
Gert Sandulescu, third,
Mary Bruce, second and
Fran Hootz, lead. With
Eddie were Ruth Dougan,
third, Dorothy Lilburn,
second and they picked a
lead for each game.
While on curling, a retiree
club member, one who takes
part in the club's summer
activites, pool and shuffleboard in the lounge at the
arena, "Doc" Holladay,
wondered aloud at our last
meeting, whether any of the
women who liked to play
shuffleboard, darts, pool,
etc. would like to join in the
Tuesday and Friday aternoon sessions. They'd be
welcome and things start
around 2 p.m. until 4 or 5
p.m.
We all lost a good friend
and a grand old gent in the
persons of "Pop" Scott,
better known as Bill by
some. Pop was going on 95 at
his passing. We wish to
extend our deepest sym-

pathy to his family who
numbered among them
some of Rossland's finest
athletes. Jim, in lacrosse,
Ray in lacrosse and diving,
Will, in ball and Archie, in
hockey.
I ran across something the
other day which gave me a
couple of moments of fun
and relaxation. It was the
following and was passed
along by my long-time
friend, Bill Harkness. Bill /
was the first guy I drank a
beer with on arriving in Trail
in '46. You guessed it, the
Montana. Anyway, here
goes. Where can you find a
cap for your knee or a key
for a lock of your hair? Can
your eyes be called an
academy because there are
pupils there? On the crown
of your head what gems can
be found? Who travels the
bridge of your nose, can the
calf of your leg eat the com
on your toe? H so why not
grow com in your ear?
