The first day of spring arrived “officially” on Friday. The quote that began this column is a part of arefrain from a song entitled Crucifixation Cartoon. Don’t worry — it’s not a misprint; you did read cor- rectly. The next verses of this refrain go like this: “today we have gathered here to sing, to be in tune ‘with Spring’s Creation” & ‘time for jubilation.”« It's a song that has been around for a number of years now — having been first done by a group of southwestern folk musicians. I used to play this “spring song” as a means of celebrating the arrival of warmer and more hospitable weather. In southwest Ontario the winters are long, cold and generally bitter. Remember the news reports earlier on this year about southern On- tario digging out from one snowstorm just in time to greet the next one? Not much happens at these times because not much can happen until the snow is cleared away. The first signs of spring are usually greeted with anticipation and jubil- ation: particularly by those who haven't the option of getting away from it all, if only for a while. Meanwhile, here in this part of the Kootenays, signs of spring are in abundance. I noticed that the little garden around our church has a pro- nounced display of very purple and very yellow cro- cuses. Spring — as the season of renewal — is indeed with us again. It is to this renewal and re- creation that this tune dir- PICARD Jack George Joséph Picard of Courtenay, son of Mr, and Mrs. Ary! Picard of Rouyand, Que., and Linda Marie Simonen of Courtenay, daughter. of Mr. and Mrs. John Simonen of Castlegar, were united in marriage Jan. 17 at St. Michaels and All Angels Protestant Chapel at the Canadian Forces Base in Comox. Padre Milne was officiating clergyman at the ceremony and organist Sandra Swanson played the Wedding March. ‘The bride, who was given in marriage by her father, wore a gown of satin and lace with a bodice of lace over satin and V neckline. The full-length satin gown also had lace sleeves and a long train edged in lace. Her headdress was lace adorned with pearls and a finger length veil. The bride carried a bouquet of silk roses with carnations in fuschia and white baby's breath. She also wore her mother's pearls. The maid of honor was the bride's sister, Laura e¢ts our : the hope and the joy and the jubilation that come with and from re- newal. It is the same deeply- felt emotion that each of us has when we realize the great promise that God has made for us in Jesus Christ. Our hope for renewal and re-creation is found in Jesus Christ. It is through him that we are “in tune with spring's creation” because we are in harmony with God's desire for us to enjoy His creation. Springtime is a time for renewal and an opportunity for each of us to participate in re-creation. It is my hope and prayer for us all that this will be a time of re-creation of hope and jubilation. "The groom was dressed in a silver grey tuxedo with matching vest and grey shoes. The groom's brother, Andre Picard of Halifax, was best man. He wore a silver grey tuxedo and cummerbund with matching grey shoes. The ushers were Jean-Marc Gagnon and Dave Spindler, both of CFB Comox. The reception hall, decorated with pink and white streamers and bells, was at the Glacier Greens Golf Course at the Canadian Forces Base. The wedding cake was three-tiered. The top layer consisted of a blown-glass heart edged by two doves, and the additional layers, edged with bouquets of pink roses, were separated with white pillars. The master of ceremonies was Ron Pennell of CFB Comox and the bride's brother, Ken Simonen of Trail, proposed a toast to the bride. Guests at the wedding came from Quebec, Halifax, 100 Mile House, Kamloops, Red Deer, Victoria and Vancouver.
