Computer gives auto designs on 3-D video TORONTO (CP) — A small Canadian company is helping car designers around the world put their imaginations on video, in 3-D and living color, Some day the computerized image-generating system could help shoppers put a new mode! of car into a family photo or home video, just to see how it looks. At least, that’s an idea of Stephen Bingham, president of Toronto-based Alias Research, which occupies offices downtown in an old chocolate factory. “You could sample any model, in any way,” he said recently, as other Alias staff gave a General Motors designer a preview of new graphic design software being released today. “You could sit in (the car), visually. You could move it, You could see what it looks like when it’s cloudy out or when it's sunny out. You could look through it.” “Hell, you could even have a marketing scheme where you would bring a photograph of the front of your house. They'd scan it in and put your new car in the laneway.” Video shopping might not satisfy inveterate tire-kickers, but the relatively simple-to-use software Alias first developed for creating television commer cials and video graphics has fired the imaginations of some car designers. About 120 Alias software systems, each costing between$89,000 and $135,000 US, have been sold to the likes of GM, Volvo, Honda, Suzuki, Isuzu, Subaru and Mitsubishi. Other customers include the National Aeronautics and Space Adminiztrstion, Boeing Aircraft Co., Motorola and Kraft. Kraft designs salad dressing bottles and shows them beside competitors’ for ii customer imp? . NASA plans to construct three-dimensional images of distant star systems, Alias software runs on a compact but powerful computer from Silicon Graphics of Mountain View, Calif, and each succeeding enhancement allows designers to create more life-like images, faster and with greater ease. The 60-employee company has come a long way since a day in 1985 when Ronald Hill, a former advanced-design studio head at GM, became a fan. As Hill moved the image of a car design around a computer monitor he realized he could have an accurate view of the car design from the driver's viewpoint. Using paper sketches, clay models and plastic prototypes, it takes months and thousands of dollars before a car designer can see his creation from the inside out. So the door was opened to GM becoming an Alias customer, just two years after Bingham, a former video producer, joined with partners Nigel McGrath, Susan McKenna and David Springer to form the company they still control. “It's a new kind of pencil, but oh boy, what a pencil,” says Charlie Graefe, the GM designer most experieneed with the Alias system. Alias has been funding itself from sales since the first two years, when it fan on about $5 million worth of venture capital from two Boston investors and Crownx Inc. of Toronto, plus the support of Ottawa's former scientific research tax credits. “A lot of us didn't know we couldn't do these things,” jokes Bingham, 38. “We had guys come right out of the University of Tororito and Waterloo with master’s degrees. I mean, these are the guys that are not supposed to be able to do real-world work. “But they're now some of the leading computer graphics guys in the world.” VA - OUR BUSINESS IS SAVING YOU New pulp mill on track VICTORIA (CP) — Makin Pulp and Paper Ltd. of Calgary has agreed to build a pulp and coated paper mill at Britannia Beach and a chipping plant in the Hudson's Hope-Chet- wynd area of northeastern British Columbia. Forests Minister Dave Parker said in a news release Friday that the Province and the company will sign a Pulpwood agreement, which will allow the company to harvest 220,000 cubic metres of aspen in north. eastern B.C. annually. About 370 jobs will be created at the pulp mill in Britannia Beach, located on Howe Sound about 40 kilometres north of Vancouver. The agreement follows a provincial government offer to forest compan: ies of access to aspen stands in northeastern B.C. last year. Louisiana Pacific Panel Products Ltd. has requested an extension of the offer's deadline to Aug. 15 and the ministry expects to hear from a third firm, Fibreco Export Inc., by July 31 y TRAVEL “Never Leave H INSURANCE Without It!"
