The village and surrounding area contain none of the Western amenities the family has become accustomed to while Norbu, 30, completed his two-year masters program in natural at the Uni of Manitoba. a But it doesn't matter. | ’ “Some things you miss,” said Norbu, who although a Sherpa speaks English with a slight New Zealand accent. “Getting fruits and vegetables. In Nepal, you can only get it in the season that it grows.” Casually dressed in a T-shirt and shorts, the, slightly built Norbu looked forward to going-back to his job as warden of Sagarmatha National Park. Sagarmatha is the Nepalese name for Everest. It means goddess or mother of the world. MOUNTAIN CHANGES But Everest isn't the same place it was when Sir Edmund Hillary; a New Zealand beekeeper, and Tenzing Norgay, a Sherpa on his seventh trip to Everest, made the historic climb to the summit on May 29, 1953. Since then, the fragile environment has been stripped of many of its trees, wildlife populations have declined, and the stream of visitors has grown from a trickle ‘to a wave. More than 5,000 people visit the park each year. Soine come from India to visit sites sacred to Hindus, but most come from the West on trekking or climbing expeditions. The pressures the visitors bring to bear on the environment and culture of the region is the reason Norbu was in Winnipeg and for four years before that, in New Zealand, to attend university. lorbu was one of three young men picked to study abroad by the Edmund Hillary Institute — an organization set up by Hillary that finances schools and hospitals in Nepal. no roads, » no area that:became a national park in 1976.
