pera ett ne Bat eee Saturday, January 30, 1993 @ VA, 7/EEES: =, New decals new beginning for B.C. drivers Of all the changes made to ICBC’s Au- toplan for 1993, one of the most signifi- cant will result in something new being added to every vehicle licence plate in the province. Motorists who were scheduled to re- new their insurance at the end of Decem- ber were the first to get it, and now it will be a part of all new or renewed poli- cies, This new attachment is a number de- cal for your licence plate that shows the specific date your new policy will expire. It is part of a new program that ICBC calls “daily” renewals. Many people can remember the days that all auto insurance policies expired at the end of February. Actually, what they remembered most was the lineups at insurance brokers as everyone crushed in at the last minute to renew their policies. That all changed in the late "70s when renewals moved to the end of each month, and has accelerated since the introduction of short-term Au- toplan policies in 1991. Moving to daily renewals will elimi- nate the month-end “crunch” at brokers’ offices, giving them more time to spend with individual customers. In the Lower Mainland, this will also mean shorter line-ups at AirCare testing stations. One of the most noticeable aspects of the new daily renewal program will be that for the first year, motorists will pur- chase less than 12 months of coverage. ICBC’s computer will have selected an expiry date fro the new policy that will not fall on either the first day or the last two days of the month. For ee if you renew at the end of February this year, the renewal form you get from ICBC next month might show your expiry day as February 20, 1994. The premium you will pay will be less than for a full 12 months. Now, if you don’t happen to care for Feb. 20 as a renewal day — perhaps your rich uncle’s birthday on the 12th is more memorable — you'll have a one-time op- tion to pick that or any other day in Feb- ruary for your renewal date. The only days not available are statu- tory holidays, the first day or the last two days of the month. Once you have picked your expiry date, you’ll receive a number decal as well as the regular “month” decal for your licence plate. On most passenger vehicle plates, the number decal will go just above the B.C. flag. ervice DOWNTOWN SHELL a) REPAIR & SERVICE 7050 BCAA APPROVED Columbia R | L Avenue 365-6133 975 Columbia Ave. Castlegar, B.c.
