eT KIN "THE SOUKCE OF UNITY" ne of the most beautiful prayers in the Bible is Christ's prayer for his disciples, as recorded Gospel Chapter 17. Here is a significant part of that prayer: ‘As you sent mento the world, | have sent them into the world. For them | sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified. My prayer is not for them alone. | pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one Father, just as you are in me and Lin you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me." John 17:18-21 O O long afterward Paul writes a letter to these beleivers, because they had already begun to divide into four separate churches! (See 1 Corinthians 1:10-13) Paul knew that the only way there could be true unity would be as each believer kept their eyes upon Christ, and refused to let every little difference of opinion divide them. A STEP TOWARD GREATER UNITY! | n the coming months, most of the churches in our community are coming together in a united effort.to share the simple and powerful * A The Castlegar Sun Wednesday, April 7, 1993 4 die treltepta epee NAIRD CHURCH OF GOD 2404 Columbia Ave., Castlegar, B.C. (See Acts 2:47b) The organization of the church was very simple tool Jesus said "Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them!’ Matthew 18:20 WHY SO MANY DIVISIONS? Tre can be no doubt that Christ wanted his followers to be united in fellow-ship and purpose. All who placed faith in Him were accepted bviously, the Christian church started out as a Rry simple but powerful and beautiful fellowship of all who had heard the truth about Christ; had sincerely repented of sin, and placed their faith in Christ. But what happened? By 60 A.D. it was already evident how easily people gravitate to human leaders. The great Apostle Paul had established a Christian congregation at Corinth. (See Acts 18) But not too truths of the Christian faith. We have been drawn together by a common concern that the love and power of the Christian faith would be experienced by many more people of our community. Believers from each of these churches are working together in harmony for this common cause. Thank God for this demonstration of unity, and may that unity continue to grow! “HOW TO" by Ivory Tower Experts ave you ever noticed that ‘Now To" books seem to be written by ‘Ivory Tower Experts’ who's grasp of reality seems to be a few bricks short of a full load and who's light’s seem to be on but nobody's home. That may be due in part to the fact that many of these books with their detailed, ten easy steps to solve your problems, (or the world’s problems for that matter) appear to be from books they have studied in the hallowed halls of higher learning. Now please don't get me wrong I'm not against higher education, but after a decade or so of personal experience in that field I've come to the conclusion that a college education won't hurt you as long as you're willing to learn something when you get out But let's get back to the issue, you know the kind of helpful material 'm talking about: “Six Steps to the Perfect Marriage’ by Dr. Mable Magilicuty the confirmed spinster. But the fact of the matter is that even though they may say the same thing as some of my other books, they tend to gather dust. There is something comforting and reassuring about an author who's understanding comes from real life experience and not from a text book When we're overwhelmed by depression that's making life unbearable we don't need psychological platitudes we need someone. who knows.and understands. When we've been humiliated and deserted by those we thought were friends there's very little comfort in “Come on, get it together, don't let it bother you" as your comforter walks off with their friend and you're left alone. When we're looking for Someone to help make sense of our pain, hugging a ‘How To" book just doesnt cut it. We want and need someone who has walked a similar path. When we need someone to understand and be there for us in our loneliness it sure helps if they have lived it themselves and have come out the other side of their despair Now, it's been said that ‘Time heals all wounds’, Oh! how | wish that were true and that Spring has an incredible ability to lift our spirits but neither are enough to fully heal our hearts. His words don't come from an ivory tower. His compassion doesn't come from a text book. His comfort doesn't come from lack of experience. He walked it, inhaled it, embraced it, and lived it! He experienced such depth of despair and depression that the scripture records that His anguish was so deep that death seemed desirable. He watched as his closest friends deserted Him. He listened to the lies and felt_,ae pain and humiliation of abuse at the hands of civic and religious authorities. And in the midst of the most excruciating pain imaginable He reaches out to his Father, the one He has lived to please only to feel the agony of being rejected and forsaken. I recently heard of a case where the court ordered a young mother who was breast-feeding her infant to pump her breast milk and bottle it so the father could Participate in the infant's feedings during visitation. When I became pregnant, my husband hounded me to get an abortion and made several threats. When I refused, he beat me up, hoping I'd have a miscar- riage. I left the animal and went through the birth of my daughter alone. We were divorced after the baby was born and I was awarded custody. The rat suddenly turned “paternal” and demanded his rights to visitation, I fought against it, reminding thé judge that this was a child he did not want. Well, Ann, I lost. I am extremely angry that the court never took this man's vio- lent behavior into consideration. I thought the welfare of the child was supposed to come first in the eyes of the law. What do you have to say about this? -- Hot Under the Collar in Sarasota, Fla. Dear Sara: I can understand your anger but “the animal" may have had a change of heart Encourage it for the child's sake If he is faking it to spite you, you'll find out soon enough by his absence. That will be the end of it Too often, innocent children are the battleground on which Parents wage war against one another and the children are the victims. Don't let this happen to your little one. Meanwhile, if your ex husband should as much as lift a finger toward you, file charges at once and get a restrain. ing order. Dear Ann Landers: Seven years ago, I learned that I was HIV positive. I'm enjoying rela tively good health and feel very fortunate. The experimental med ication seems to be working well I met a wonderful woman: who is intelligent, independent and successful. She saw "no problem” with going out with me despite my HIV status, which I revealed after our first date and before our first kiss. We were married 18 months ago, after having lived together for a year. We are very happy. My wife told me early in our courtship that she never wanted to have a family. Her father was an alcoholic and her childhood was miserable. In light of my physical condition and because things could take a sudden tur for the worse, we have agreed to remain childless. The oroblem is with family members and friends. We are constantly asked, "So when are you going to have children? How many children do you want? Why don't you have children, you would be the perfect parents.” Ann, this intrusive questioning bothers me. How should I respond? My HIV status is no one's business but must I always end up with a stone in the pit of my stomach whenever these questions. are asked? -- Discon- certed in D.C. Dear D.C.: I am amazed at the number of people who feel an obligation to respond to nun-uv- yer-bizznizz type questions that only a clod would ask. Prime examples: "How much money do you make?" "Did you get preg- nant on purpose?" And the one you are getting, "When are you going to have children?” POLLAINE E. EMDE 1480 COLUMBIA AVE. CASTLEGAR, B.C.
