Wednesday, September 1, 1993 Mates, Hawks and Tom Kats flag grabbing JOHN VAN PUTTEN Sun Sports Down, set, hut one, hut two. hut three. This was a common call as local football action start ed once again What was missing in the weekend games, was the sound of colliding shoulder pads asso ciated with bone-crunching tack les that most people consider commonplace on the profession al football field. Local football enthusiasts are taking part in a Flag Football league which allows them to take part in a game which they love to play but avoid much of the possibility of major injuries that are com mon during a full-contact game This year the three m local Flag Football league is made up of the Castlegar Tom Kats, Slo: can Valley Dam Inn Mates, and the Trail Hawks, Last season the league was made up of four teams, but this season the remaining players have combined to make three strong, evenly matched squads “All the teams are basically even in the league this year,” said Ron Cole, member of The Castlegar Sun Castlegar Tom Kats. In their first action of the sea son, Castlegar earned a tie in one and came out on top inthe other. Saturday, Castlegar trav elled to Trail to meet up with the Hawks. This season opener proved how each team is closely matched with the others. The Tom Kats found themselves in a 12-12 tie at the half-time break, during the second half each team could only score one touchdown , and the game ended in a 18-18 deadlock. Hoping to carn their first win of the season, the Kats hosted the Slocan Valley team, the Dam Inn Mates.on Sunday. Close compe tition continued on this, day two of the season as the teams were ina 14-14 ve at half time In the second half the Tom Kats took the lead and managed to’keep the Mates from catching up on the scoreboard. When the final whistle was sounded the Kats had the lead 28-20 and that's how it will be entered in the league scorebook With their first win behind them the Tom Kats had a chance to analyse their performance “Our outstanding player this Chris Lewis who scored three touch downs,” Tom Kats team member Neil Berme!l said following Sun day's game Adding to the wide range of players that make up their team. the Tom Kats used thé rugby experience of players to utilize plays, which involved flipping the ball back to other team mem. bers in rugby style, thus adding extra yard gains onto some plays. “We did lots of flip pass es, Rugby style, this weekend and it helped us out,” Berme! said In Flag Football, to. avoid most of the contact, each player wears a belt around the waist onto which two flags are attached by Velcro. Once a per son carrying the ball has their flag removed by an opposing teams player he is considered “tackled” and the play is whis tled down weekend was rookie SUN SPORTS PHOTO / John Van Putten This Slocan Valley player had nowhere to go as he was sandwiched between two Castlegar Tom Kats during Sunday's flag football game in Castlegar.
