Chernoff helps Home Support The Castlegar Home Sup port Guild held its monthly meeting Oct. 22 in con junction with an in-service training session. Forty-one home support workers were present. Welcome was ex tended to nine new home support workers. This month's training session on first aid in the home was presented by Lawrence Chernoff of the provincial ambulance service: Material covered by Cher noff included heart attack, bleeding, fractures, eye in juries, burns, cold exposure hypothermia, and household chemical poisoning — their immediate first aid — and in-service when it is necessary to call the ambulance. Upcoming in-service train- ing includes a session on time management, fire safety and hazards in the home, and coping with the death of a client. Thanks was given to par. ticipating merchants for their support of the upcoming raffle. Due to their gener- osity many homemakers will be able to attend future workshops and training ses- sions to further improve home support service in the community Plans are currently under- way for a bake and craft sale and coffee party Read to speak to Aglow group June Read of Castlegar will be the speaker at the Tuesday Women's Aglow luncheon at the Fireside Place. Read was born and raised in Castlegar by her parents, Jack and Lily Killough. Read and her husband, Gordon, have raised four children — Peggy Nuyens, Linda Dalla Lana, Tammy and Steven. They also have four grand children. Read works part time as a key punch operator and also on a computer in an account ing office in Trail. She served on the local Aglow board for several years and for the past five years on the Kootenay area board. In September she attended the national Aglow conven tion in Ottawa with approx imately 800 other ladies from across Canada. The theme of this conference was Called to the Nation for Such a Time as This. Read will share some of the highlights from the conven- tion in her talk. She will also sing a song she learned in Ottawa. You may have heard this word and wohdered what it means. No, it’s not a caterpillar, a kind of dance or something you eat. Cursillo is one of the most significant renewal move ments in the church in the 20th century The Cursillo Movement began in Spain following World II in order to bring men back into the Roman Catholic Church. The move- ment was so phenomenally successful with the men that soon women also participated in Cursillo for Christian re- newal and growth. While the Cursillo Move ment began in the Roman Catholic Church, it soon spread to the Episcopal Church in the United States and then to the Anglican Church in Canada. One of the wonderful things about Cur: sillo is that it crosses denom inational lines and brings to- gether Christians of all churches who are seeking to renew and revitalize their faith. Cursillo is a Spanish word meaning “short course.” This short course, an intensive course on the basis of Christ ianity, takes place on a four. day weekend. Those people who take the course are called Cursillistas. Cursillo, however, is far more than just a weekend course. It offers Christians an ongoing method to deepen and enrichen their faith so that they can live more dynamic and fruitful lives. It offers a structure for future growth and develop. ment via group reunions and ultreya meetings. Group re. unions are brief, weekly meetings of Cursillistas who support one another in their spiritual pilgrimage by shar. ing and prayer. Ultreyas (which is a Span- ish word meaning “onward”) are~monthty~ gatherings of Cursillistas -which include joyous singing, instruction, sharing and refreshments. The four-day Cursillo we ekend is a marvellous exper. ience. Talks are given by both clergy and lay people. The singing is joyful and up- lifting. The food and fellow ship are terrific. And boy do the candidates and team members ever have fun! I attended Cursillo in 1982 at a high school in Peter borough, Ont. and enjoyed it thoroughly. Since then I have given talks at two women's and one men's Cursillo week ends in the Diocese of Koot enay. Helping at these week ends has been a great bless ing to me as a parish priest. I have been given a won derful vision of the kind of love and fellowship that I would like to see in the church all the time. Also, I have been deeply moved by the excellent talks given by the lay people. It is also tremendously en. couraging for a minister to see people really growing in their faith and enjoying it as never before. I was very pleased that four parishoners from St. David's attended Cursillo this fall in Nelson All four really enjoyed it. How good is Christianity? Unfortunately many people, including many church people, haven't the foggiest idea. Life in Christ is fan. tastic, and thankfully move. ments like Cursillo are help ing many people to realize this. If anyone would like to find out more about the Cursillo Movement, please phone me at 365-2271 Micro Mania is coming!
