cage of 72. He was born Emie
Jennings Ford on Feb. 13,
1919, just a few blocks from
the line that divides the city of
‘Bristol between Virginia and
‘Tennessee. Ford was born on
‘the Tennessee side, thus his
‘nickname. Ford began per-
forming as a boy in his school
choir and band, where he
played the trombone. He
studied music at Intermont
College and the Cincinnati
Conservatory of Music. He
began working as an announc-
erat WOPI in Bristol in 1937.
He enlisted in the Air Force
‘during World War II and be-
came a bombardier. After the
service, Ford returned to an-
nouncing, then appeared as a
