In one last high school basket- ball fling, the top players from the East and West Kootenay schools will come together at Stanley - Humphries this weekend for the annual East-West All-star game. There will be two games Satur- day,-one featuring the top female players at 6 p.m. arid the next match-up will highlight the top _ male players from the past season set to jump off at 8 p.m. To field two girls teams, event organizer Jack Closkey said they would be combining all the play- ers from both the East and West together, then making two evenly matched teams. “The East team was weak, with only ten players nominated,” Closkey said. To solve the East's low number of players Closkey said combining all the players together was the easiest solution. All one has to do is look at the exquisitely hand- embroidere@ silk shawls “platok” which are worn on special occa- sions; or at the satin-smooth fin- ish of a hand-crafted soup ladle to know that the Doukhobor pres- encé has greatly enriched Canadi- an culture. Their traditions are woven into a fabric of sturdy and colorful threads which, when joined together, form the tapestry which is the Doukho- bor’s unique heritage. ’ These traditions survive from generation to generation with the aoe of knowledge and skills rom forefathers who have. the insight and the patience to pass it on. Nick Denisolf, of Glade, is one of those forefathers. “My idea is to pass it on, that’s very important. I just wanted to encourage the kids to take over. We carried it so far, so it would be nice if someone carried it on.” With the financial assistance of the Kootenay Men’s Group and the Union of Spiritual Gommunities in Christ (U.S.C.C.), ion of Youth, Nick has"been holding workshops to teach others to carve ladles, a handicraft which he said is specific to the Doukhobor’s of Castlegar . Since 1899. “This is a Russian-Doukhobor craft. The craft itself identifies the Doukhobor people. I feel Castlegar is at the heart of the traditional hand-caryed ladles.in ‘the world.” Nick said ladles and spoons made in Castlegar can be found all around the world. When Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip visited Canada in the early 1980s they were presented with a plaque holding two ladles and a spoon carved by Nick. As well, both Dave Barrett and Bill Bennett were presented with ladles at the opening of their ‘parliaments, and wooden spoons were on dis- play at E: in Spokane. There are even handcrafted wooden spoons and ladles on display in the Nation- al Museum in Ottawa. Thanks to people like Nick Denisoff, the next generation has a tradition which they in turn can pass on to those who follow. Nick. Denisoff instructs members of the younger generation on the techniques used to form and finish traditional Doukhobor ladles. - Listening intently to his instructions are Jessie Denisoff and Jarred Ozeroff.
