In a wide- ranging interview with The News sports editor Ed Mills, Castlegar native Steve Bozek goes over his National Hockey League career, with special emphasis on the good, bad and ugly of playing hockey on an expansion team in California Steve Bozek Q: Time for an update. The last time we talked to you was just after you got picked up by San Jose. You went into that situation with high expectations regarding your role with the team and the team itself, How do you feel about it now? Bozek: “A little mixed. Things haven’t gone quite as smooth as probably I'd hoped, but things never really do. Overall, the team’s been struggling, but that was kind of expected. The biggest factor on our team is that we just don’t have a whole lot of offensive capabilities, so at this point if we're going to win any games we really have to rely on a defensive style of play.” Q: How has it gone for you personally? Bozek: “All and all, It’s been fun. It’s beautiful living down here and we’re (he and wife Patricia) really happy about that. I think I’ve been doing fine. As a new organization you know that mistakes are going to be made and “You go into some of the rinks , like Edmonton and Calgary and it’s deathly quiet. It’s almost like everybody in the stands is an expert in the game of hockey. They just don’t seem to get excited they way the Americans do.” Steve Bozek Q: How big was the club’s win over Vancouver last week? Bozek: “Oh, it was an important win for us. Vancouver is right at the top of the league right now and it was one of the best games we've played. We got a solid game from our defence, from our goaltending and kind of from everybody. It’s going to give a lot of guys on the team the I think that we definitely made them — from a business point and also from a hockey point. But I think the organization is moving forward, and over the past three weeks we've been playing a lot better. So it looks a little more encouraging than it did, say, a few weeks into the season.” now that we can play with the better teams in the league.” Q: Has the team crossed over any big hurdles with that win? Bozek: “I'm not sure. The biggest thing with our team is that we have to come out playing well and we can’t get into a hole right away. Once we're behind, like I was mentioning earlier, we just don’t have the talent or the capability to come back and score three or four goals to get back into the game. We have to be in a close game, we play so much better when were ahead then when we're behind.” Q: You had said that going to San Jose would be a good career move for you — more ice time, a fresh start and whatnot. How has it worked out for you in that sense? Bozek: “It’s worked out OK. It’s still-early in the move down here so you never know. Our coaches (head coach George Kingston and assistant, Bob Murdoch) have the philosophy that they really go with four lines regardless of the situation. So I don’t think any one player on our team, or any one line is getting as much ice time as they’d like, but it’s been fair. It’s also kind of strange because with the the other teams in the league, probably 80 or 90 per cent of them just go with three lines on most occasions. Then it comes down to us, and we probably have the least talent in the league and the least depth and we're the one team that kind of goes with four lines all the time.” Q: Why do you think the coaches want it that way? Please see BOZEK, page 18 Rebels win 4th straight @ Last-second lesson, heroics gives surging Rebels 4-3 victory over Beaver Valley in KIJHL News Staff The Castlegar Rebels taught their opponents a valuable lesson Saturday night in a Kootenay International Junior Hockey League game in Beaver Valley. The subject of the lesson was the importance of winning faceoffs. And like any good teacher, the Rebels taught by example. Rebels centre Derek Lalonde won a faceoff in Beaver Valley’s end and defenceman Kevin Nisse scored with three seconds remaining on the clock in the third period to give the Rebels a 4-3 win over the Nite Hawks. It was the Rebels third goal of the period which they went into trailing 2-1_ The win stretched the Rebels longest winning streak of the season to four games. The Nite Hawks led 2-0 late into the second period before Dave Dybal connected from Shane Cutler and Mike Jodoin to cut that lead in half. Lalonde was also in on the Rebels second goal which tied the game early in the third as he set up Cutler three minutes into the frame. The Nite Hawks took a 3-2 lead then Dybal got his second of the night unassisted to set up the last minute lesson. Joel Casey got the win in net for the Rebels, who will put their streak on the line Friday at the Community Complex against Golden. The Rebels big test will come Saturday when they travel to Grand Forks to meet the Border Bruins, a team they haven’t beaten this season, but which sits closest to them in the West Division standings. ~ Talk to us today.
