ROSSLAND EVENING RECORD| MAKING THINCS HUA BY EBER OC, SMITH, Published every day (except Sunday) and Weekly DAILY: One Yvir in advance 61x Moutur . Ore Month... By Carrier by the Week. Single copy. WEEKLY: One Year, in advance, Six months, in advance Single copy.. MONDAY, JUNE 14, 1897, On account of the high rents and ex- pensive living, the Rossland barbers have formed a union and fixed the price of shaving at 25 cents which is not un- reasonable _ considering everything. There is one shop which so far has re- fused to join the union and is shaving ior 15 cents. It is understood th t the trades unions of Rossland will wait up- on the proprietor of this rat shop and request him to join in establishing union prices and if he refuses, he will have to take the consequences. Itis also said that the landlords of the city will go elsewhere to shave and that many of the patrons of the cheap shops have declared their in- tention to patronize union shops. Ross- land does not want to earn the reputa- tion of being a cheap town in any sense, —_——__. It is said that the water and light company has offered their plant to the city at about actual cost and at a figure that the income from them will pay a handsome revenue upon the investment. If this is true, and the system is sub- stantially built, and the city can see ita way clear to pay for them, there should be no delay in closing the bargain. ——_. Everybody should lend a willing hand in helping to make the jubilee celebra- tion a success. Rossland has so far done nothing by the halves and it is truly to be hoped that the 22nd will pass with- out an exception being made. NEWS FROM CREIGHTON. The Bug Un Puts Upthe Money and the Australian Will Think It Over. Buffalo, June 10.—John L. Sullivan arrived in Buffalo this evening in com- pany with his backer, Frank B. Dunne of Boston, and immediately started on a hunt for Champion Bob Fitzsimmons. The rival pugilists came together at the Lyceum theatre, where Fitzsimmons’ vaudeville company is holding forth. Sullivan wanted to talk fight right away, but was prevailed on to wait un- the conclusion af the performance. At 11 o’clock tonight Sullivan, Fitz- simmons, Quinn, Martin Julian and a host of other sports met at a hotel. Sullivan issued a formal challenge to Fitzsimmons fora finish fight for the ta | world’s championship and aside bet of $5,000. Dunne produced $2,000 to bind the match. Fitzsimmons at first said that he thought he had earned a rest, and did not intend to fight again at least for a year, but on Sullivan urging him strongly to arrange a match, the cham- Pion promised to take the matter into consideration and give Sullivan a defin- ite answer shortly. The meeting be- tween the fighters was quite friendly. IN HONOR OF JUBILEE. A grand concert by Rossland’s best local talent.
