Castlegar — 365-7702 College programs for special needs Providing specialized training to pedple with special needs is the aim of one of Selkirk College's hewest programs. Operating out of the Castlegar Campus as part of the Human Services Department, the special needs program has been designed for those currently employed with agen: cies meeting the needs Of Those with mental and/or physical handicaps. In addition, the program provides an extended training option to graduates ofa social service worker program or an early childhood education program who wish to work with handicapped adults or children **A needs survey indicated a high degree of demand for this kind of training in the Kootenay region,”” said Jan Lin dsay, who together with social service worker instructor Phyllis Nash, and early childhood education instructor Judy Pollard, spent the past several months on curriculum development for the speciatneeds program Questionnaires were sent to all organizations em ploying special needs para-professionals, and the response indicated a potential enrolment of 40 individuals among those\currently working in preschool and day care ventres across the region In developmental group homes, community service agencies, and school districts, there are currently 153 em ployees working with the special needs population and a projected increase of 141 additional positions over the next two years. This due in part to the closure of Woodlands and the return of approximately 40 mentally handicapped in dividuals to the Kootenay region In addition, Lindsay pointed out that social service worker graduates may seek post-basic training to work more effectively with: handicapped and dependent-aged populations. To meet this demand, Selkirk College began offering Two of The Courses That make-up part-of-the-special-necds curticulum in January “We've begun with two, so students working in the field can take courses on a part-time basis, while they work,"’ Lindsay said 2 Of the inaugural courses, one is an introductory special needs course while the other, augmentative com: munication, explores alternative forms of communication for children and adulis wishHtrtfor no speech The special needs program is slated to begin full-time in September and will offer students a choice of three streams of instruction qualifications. Stream one has been designed for those without credentials in either the social service worker or the early childhood education field, but who have a minimum of one year experience in the fieldof special needs. Stream two is designed for graduates of a recognized social service Worker program or its equivalent. The third stream is for graduates of a recognized early childhood education program. ‘The ECE and the SSW program have’ a thread of commonality running though them, but each emphasize different areas of competency," Lindsay said. “In either case, the special needs program will provide the post-basic training required to work effectively with juvenile or adult special needs populations.” The program offers a core curriculum comprised of eight specialty courses over a 15-week and a 19-week semester with a practicum interspetsed in the middle. of the second semester, Those already employed. in the field will be able to use their position to meet practicum requiremen: ts depending upon the student's *We are scheduling courses to allow study on a part time basis to accommodate those already employed who would like to upgrade their credentials,”’ Lindsay said. She said some courses will be offered in the evening or blocked into four two-day workshops so those with jobs could at- tend. ““A- conscientious -part-time student could complete the program in approximately two years," she said Lindsay listed the types of jobs for which graduates of the program would be suitable. These include: special needs-pre-school teachers, residential support workers, self-help workers, special needs child care workers, tutors, or personal care attendants in the public. school system, xecrealion therapisis, and vocational support workers, The transfer arrangenients for credit eartiéd iit Selkirk College’s special needs program is currently being in vestigate with the University of Calgary’s bachelor of rehabilitative studies program Applications are invited from anyone interestéd in the field of special needs who meets (He admission requiremen= ts.
