John R. Cook Says He Cannot Act as Alderman. John R. Cook says he has informed the ccmmittee, which’ did him the honor to plu.ce him in the field as a candidate for city alderman at the en- electd. Mr. Cook says that his busi. ness will keep him away from Ross- land this summer a great deal of the time, so it will simply be impossible for him to discharge the duties of the office, and it would not be fair either to the people or himself to assume to do what he cannot do. There should be a few more, good candidates in the field for aldermen e6 as to prevent the election of a few bad ones who think they are running. —- 3 TRAIL DEPARTMENT. UKE ADAM'S NATIVE LAND Prospector Borden Leads to a Veritable Garden of Eden. FORTY MILES FROM TRAIL Not an Opium Dream--Butter- cups Overlooked by Blizzard. Trail, March 22.-[Special to Record] Major W. A. Cooper, with Warring Kennedy, Neil Cochrane and Prospec- tor Borden. of Rossland, who have been up the river about 40 miles, ex- amining some mining property, re- tarned last night on the Trail. When seen at the Windsor hotel by the Recorp’s representative, Major Cooper said he had just returned from the Garden of Eden. Bei ¢ asked to ex- plain the startling information, he said: ~ “I have just seen the most remark- able phenomenon that has ever come under my ebservation—a veritable Garden of Eden. In the midst of the snow-capped peaks with heavy snow storms in full blast within a mile, my companions and myself lay upon green grasa without Our coats and en- joyed almost spring weather. “It was 87 miles from Trail on the Oclumbia river. We left ‘Trail last SS BODY IN THE COLOMBIA The Remains of Godfrey Carlson Found Above Trail, MAY HAVE KILLED HIMSELF It Is Not Known Who He Is or Where He Came From. Trail, March 22. (Special to the REcorD. }—Saturday afternoon Mr. Holter came into Trail and notified W. J. Devitt. chief of police, that he had seen what appeared to be the body of aman lying in the river about five miles above Trail. Captain Devitt immediately started to investigate. A short distance below the Rock Creek camp of the Robson extension he found the body ef &: man apparently about 40 years of age lying in the river near the bank.. He secured a row boat and brought the body to Trail, where it has since been awaiting identifica- tion and word from Coroner Bowes. Fiom papers found on the body his name was learned to be Godirey Carl- son. Yeetesday he was further iden- tified by Andrew Johnston who has known him for several years. The following letter was found on his person, evidently written and not mailed-or a copy of one sent. Trac. Cresx, B.C., Jan., 1897. Mr. Frep BAKER: I wish you would sell my claim for $50. Yeu can ask Parther. He might buy it. “Youcan send. the money to Trail Creek, B.C. Yours, GoprrEy CARLsoN. > Otfcer Devitt is unable to locate the claim or find Baker or Parther. He has been making every effort to obtain information regacding Carlson. It is kuown that he worked for some time for Surveyor Oscar Englend The last known of him, prior to the finding of his body, was that be worked five hours for Sub-Contractor Johngon on the Robson branch of the Columbia & Western, ihe latter part of January. He was missed at the time, but little or no effort was made to locate him, as he was known to be a man of intemperate habits and of erratic disposition. Although there are marks on the back of the neck what might indicate foul play, it is more likely they were caused by striking against the rocks in the river. He was known here as ® quiet, Friday i in a blindi snow storia and as the storm has been of unusual length and severity and has resulted in such a deep show fall here and at Ressland, we came near aban- doning our trip. Prosp' Bor- man and was well liked. He came from Spokane. The coroner thinks there is no oc- casion for an inquest as Carlson, no doubt, committed suicide. den had so p' tly claimed and If nothing further is learned of him still insisted that we sbould find no snow on his claims that we finally concluded to push on believing that we would enjoy the t:1p. The storm continued until noon. We had great sport with Borden about his fabulous enowless region and had so far shaken his faith that as we were drawing near our destination, he admitted that perhaps, owing to the great fall of snow, there might be a couple of feet there. “You can imagine our surprise and wonderment at finding in ths midat of thie vast snow region a spot over 8000 feet long and 200 feet wide where green grass and beautiful flowers were smiling their welcome.” Major Cooper exhibited in pioof of his statement a small bucket half filled with tufts of grass and flowers of the buttercup variety, pul:-1 up hy the roote. They were not hothouse flowers. The other gentlemen in the party testified to the remark- able phenomenon, saying they knew it was hardly reasonable that such a thing could be. They have become very much inter- ested and will indeavor to learn the causes. They describe the tract as sbaped like a half moon, circled by high mvuuntains on one side with the Columbia rive on the other. It is theught that a thermal spring may be the cause of the strange spot. hie ins will be buried here tomor- row. PERSONALS. M. A.
