Working with nature

@ Sprucing up hiking trails
near Slocan all in a day's work
for Environment Youth Corps

On a trail overlooking Slocan
Lake, the morning sun just starting
to peek through a misty dawn, a
handful of young adults set out to
thake nature a little more
enjoyable.

The crew, three 18-year-olds and
two 20-year-olds, is part of the
Environment Youth Corps, a
government initiative that hires 16-
to 24-year-olds to work on
environmental projects.

“Parks applies for a project, they
get approval and we do it,” explains
the crew's supervisor Frank Smith.

This crew’s project over the past
five weeks has been improvements
to a hiking trail in Valhalla Park
that starts at the southwest tip of
the lake at Slocan — filling in dips,

ing steps, rerouting around
awkward spots, creating rest areas,
widening narrow sections and
building restraining walls.

That and more are all part of a
day’s work for crew members Lee
Lidstone, Peter Makortoff, John

All the materials they use are
nature’s own — a fallen tree to
make a bench, rocks to support
eroded areas and to build stairs.

“It’s neat to see how you can use
whatever's there to do what needs
to be done,” Lidstone says.

“And how you can see what you
did after a day's work, the results of
your work,” adds Makortoff.

The crew first set out armed with
a list of 25 improvements to make
during the six-week project.

“Basically we did the bulk of
those in the first three weeks,”
Smith said. Since then they've
made at least 25 additional
improvements and have some
“major rerouting” work planned.

“But sometimes we just take a
day for R and R — roots and rocks,”
Smith said, explaining that roots on
the trail get slippery when they’re
wet and rocks are hard on hikers’
feet.

The crew hikes in-a little further
each day and works hard once they
get there, but all of them agree it’s
a good job and it gives them a good
feeling.

“That's because you're leaving a
legacy to your children and
grandchildren to enjoy,” Smith says
to the crew.
