Troops from all over the Pacific Northwest will rotate week-long stays throughout the six-month fair, The lads ‘will serve aS messengers, tour guides and general helpers. They will raise the lower the flags that will flutter all over the 100-acre fairgrounds. And, in their best tradi- tions, they will probably even zhelp old ladies across streets. , * ‘The Boy Scouts will set up “ ina tent city along the banks of -the Spokane River, which flows right through the downtown project is being coordinated by Mrs, Carol Rusk, Expo community affairs manager, and Robert Lamott, director of the Inland Empire Boy Scout Council in Spokane. The annual grape harvest at Selkirk College is now over. Master Vintager, Frans Braal, ‘aald that despite poor condl- tions this year, the harvest is A ‘cold December, with very little snow cover, allowed the frost to penetrate some of the roots weakening the vine. The lack of rain this summer, caused problems to some of the newer plants, but for the well-established vines, the high temperatures were {deal for ripening the grapes, The master vintager hav- ing successfully completed his task, the grapes are now taken over by the master vintner, George Dubokovic, to trans- form into wine. Four types of grapes were harvested this year from the eight varieties grown, Two black grapes, the ‘Foch' and a variety identified as S 9549, {acutally a Seibel Hybrid), have produced excellent grapes with a high sugar content. Of the two green grapes harvested, the Riesling, a late varity, was harvested this week and has yet to be analyzed. The other, known as V 95123, an American hybrid, has not had a good year and Mr. Dubokovic indicated that it may be replaced as the wine quality is poor. To the experts, the grape imparts a “foxy” taste to the wine. ‘The college vineyard is managed by the Worshipful Company of Selkirk Vintners under the direction of the venerable master, Dr. Bruce Fraser. The objectives of the © Worshipful Company are to propagate the cultivations of vines in the West Kootenays and to develop a high quality wine using only the grapes produced. So far, the Worshipful Company has‘ been successful. Grape cuttings have been donated by the provincial government and‘the Summer- land Federal Agricultural Re- search Station, Bottles of Selkirk wine have been given to distinguished visitors to the college, including government , ministers, and the former Gov.-Gen. Roland Michener, who complimented the college ‘on producing ‘one of the finest Canadian wines he, had tasted. "Mr. Dubokovie commented that the success of the vineyard at Selkirk College indicated that there isa potential for a modest amount of grape culti- vation in the West Kootenays and noted that the current demand for grapes is very high. Anyone interested: in grape cultivation should contact him at Selkirk College. Mr. Whittaker said the Trudeau government “has fail- ed to bring in any concrete proposals” to deal with inflation and unemployment. He sald the Liberals claim to have “consti- tuency plans,” but they fail to bring them forward in parlia- ment, The Conservative MP pre- dicted the present minority House of Commons will last until the spring of next year. Ho said that while there wore rumors that parliament wouldn't last earlier this fall, “the NDP-Liboral marriage of convenience held firm." Mr. Whittaker said the Progressive Conservative Par- ty still favors price and wage controls, He said strong action is necessary to halt the inflationary spiral and the Liberals “simply hope the problems will go away.” The Okanagan-Boundary MP was visiting §Kootenay- West as part of ‘a planned program to have Conservative MPs visit seats presently held by members of other parties.
