j EPP-JALK :J --- 1¥ilh ~arry Pepper After a couple of weeks of having to stand by while rains forced cancellation of our retirees opener at the upper course, Tuesday some 40-plus oldsters were out to enjoy it. With the first group teeing off at 8 a.m. they followed one another in a steady flow until our group, composed of Tim Jenkin, Roger McEwan, Peter Brown and myself, took off about 9:40. While it did cool off as time went by, it was a pleasant day for golf. Let's hope we have more of the same. . .Jack Buchanan won the low gross competition with a 41 and in the least putts section four were tied at 14 each. Roger McEwan turned out to be the winner in a lucky draw over Percy Cutler, Rich Watkinson and Wes Tanner. In the hidden hole high competition, number 6 was the hold and Bill Evans won it with a nine. The hidden hold low, number 7, was a tie between Willie Scott, Romeo DeBiasio and McEwan, again chosen by a draw it was won by Willie Scott, all had fours. While on the subject of golf, the upper course is being kept in great shape for so early in the season. The continued wet weather has played havoc with certain areas of the course; the low side of number 9 is a perennial sore spot while a soggy area exists from the edge of number 2 across 6 and 7 and the area at the dogleg of number 1 and extending behind the tee on number 9 and back of number 6 green. Ditching has been done in this area and also in front of number 7 tee where I imagine tiling and piping will later be-completed. One point which I have heard raised about the course is the lack of the rope tow on number 5. I understand that this job has been let to contract and a start will be made on it soon. Meanwhile, it is keeping some people from using the course who would really like to play up there. Besides, the tow is unique and is quite an attraction. It is part of the Rossland course and the sooner it is restored the better. While on the subject of the Rossland course, I would like to say that while I've had nobody so far come up with any suggestions with regard to the old Mountie building down by the ninth green, I did hear there was a possibility it might be tom down. I, along with a number of others, would hate to see this happen. It is a landmark, rather isolated I'll admit, but it's a link with history and as such should be saved if at all possible. I'm trying to find out more about it and will tackle some official sources as the next move. The hockey season is now officially over. The Islanders gave it their best shot especially in that last game but the Oilers were up to the task of holding on and winning all the marbles. A young fellow, his name escapes me just now, said to me on Sunday at the golf course, "Harry, did you hear Gretzky is going to be sold to the New York Rangers for $14 million?" He added, "Put that is your column, then when it happellf you can say, you heard it here first, folks!" Rather a wry sense of humor. Meanwhile, we can concentrate on baseball, football, soccer and what have you, for our weekend viewing. Maybe this year it will be the Llona tum to take it all in the CFL Locally, the summer sports are going fine despite no help from the weatherman. All kinds of ball for local fans, from baseball, senior, junior and minor leagues, t1'.rougb fastball, slow-pitch, et al and then the soccer in all phases, senior, oldtimers and minor leagues are all· there for our enjoyment and then there's rugby. There are some rugged characters that take part in that game and we have one staunch rugger fan in Rossland, Paddy Flood. He really takes his rugger seriously. Yes, you could safely say we are well endowed with spectator sports in our area. Till next week, then!
