chairs, if people wanted to come in for coffee and cakes.
One day a woman came to me, she said, ‘You have to do
something.’ I had a girl working for me and she had a bad ~
rash on her. hands. I told her she had to leave. She
couldn't bake anymore. She left crying. Two days later I
had a letter from a lawyer to go to court. I had to pay $150
for insulting an English woman. I had to sell everything I
had.”

Fred moved to Castlegar, and from there to Renata
where he pruned trees and picked fruit for a dollar a day.
From Renata the Wendishes have lived and worked in
various B.C. locales, among, them Quesnel,, Vancouver
Island and Chilliwack. The Wendishes finally moved back
to Renata, where Fred bought 11 acres. This was home
for them until the Keenleyside dam was built when they
moved to Castlegar. --

In 1974 Olga passed away, and Fred began his book.
“I had nothing else to do. I sold everything. I wanted to
commit suicide. Why I didn’t do it I don’t know. I was a
coward I guess.”

Throughout the years Fred has been very active in
the New Democratic Party and the Legion. He says, “I
think there is something wrong in our country. There was
inflation when I was in Russia. There was inflation when
I came back to Germany. When I came to Canada there
was depression. Now we're having inflation again.
