Our Action Ad Number is 365-2212 The increasing value of the Cana- dian dollar against the U.S. dollar has already “wiped out” any gains claimed by the federal government as accruing from the Mulroney-Rea- gan trade deal. Kootenay West-Rev. elstoke NDP candidate Lyle Kristi- ansen told Castlegar teachers at the Kinnaird Hall last week. Addressing the 1988 annual gen eral meeting of the Castlegar District Teachers’ Association on the topic of privatization and free trade, Kris- tiansen said, “Since the Tories turned their about face and started talking free trade, the Canadian dollar has moved from 70 cents to the upside-over thrills of the Conklin idway and a park-full of free entertainment. Bop to the beat of the 50s, the 60s, 70s and 80s on 88 Street in Stampede Park, and shake your cowboy booties anywhere, anytime the western spirit moves you. over 80 cents US. And you don't need your calculators to figure out that’s a rise of 15 per cent. “Bearing in mind that 85 per cent of Canada’s current exports to the U.S. already enter their market duty-free this means that even if the Mulroney trade deal gave up 100 per cent duty-free export entry to the U.S. — which it won't — we've already lost whatever trading advan- tage we presumably stood to gain. Some deal. “According to recent Canadian forest industry studies, every one- cent rise in our dollar has cost our national] forest industry $150 million dollars a year in lost revenues — $50 million dollars in B.C. alone. And that’s the annual loss in just one of our export industries which amounted toa $750 million dollar loss in 1987 alone. “What did Canada give away in order to get this ‘big-nothing’ deal?’,” Kristiansen asked. “Well, we gave the Americans the Continental Energy Pact they've al ways wanted — for nothing,” he res- ponded. “And we gave them the right to directly take over any Can- adian company under $150 million dollars (two times the size of the UtiliCorp-WKPL deal) — without conditions — for nothing. And we gave them the right to indirectly take over any company or bank or industry in Canada — without con- ditions — for nothing. We've given them Canada — for nothing — and that's a bad deal!” Quoting itfternational oil price predictions recently ‘released in a report by the Harvard University Energy and Environmental Policy Centre in a study recently conducted for Japanese government and busi- ness agencies, Kristiansen said that international oil prices are predicted to double to “more than $30 dollars a barrel” within three years. ATTENTION “If and when that happens, that's when Canadian consumers and do- mestic industries will again demand that the federal government do something and act again to protect Canadians by making our own Can- adian energy supplies available to Canadian consumers and Canadian industries at a reasonable made in Canada price. “But if the Mulroney government gets its way and implements their trade deal, the government of Can- ada will not be able to act to protect Canadians — no matter what the people want — because this current government — the Mulroney gov- ernment — will have sold out the right of Canadians to both claim and set the price and terms of use for our own energy resources. “The ready avaialability of low cost energy and the advantage of a fa vorable Canada-U.S. exchange rate are the biggest competitive edge we in the West Kootenay have,” Kris- tiansen said. “We can’t afford to give them and the jobs that go with them away — at any price — and certainly not for free.” “What is clear,” Kristiansen said, “is that the Mulroney trade deal and the Vander Zalm privatization pro- gram are both going to make life worse and less fair for average Canadians and ordinary British Col- umbians. .” Arrow Lakes survey begins Kootenay West MP Bob Brisco confirmed today that the $500,000 hydrographic survey project for the Arrow Lakes is underway. “The preliminary portion of the project is near completion,” explain- ed Brisco. “The photographic control, which is the surface or-ground sur- During June, When You Buy or Lease a New or Used* Car or Di. 5058 “Used Vehicles Must Have A Sale Price CALL COLLECT 365-2155 BUICK GMC LTD. 365-2155 Col ect Automatically Earn a Chance in Our No Bull Sweepstakes Contest Truck From Maloney Pontiac, You Thursday, June 2 through to Wednesday, June 8 COHOE INSURANCE 1120-4th Street, Cestlegar a 4 nee ya i ii Hifla in Halll , Ue fi ip ar i pine a HIN ie ial.)
