Herewith is her report on the dangers and delights of life on this sunny, sandy strand, where the hous- ing prices keep going up, while. the mountains keep coming down, By Sharon Daley MALIBU, Calif. (AP) — In 1970 fire jumped the Pacific Coast highway and! burned 37 homes; in 1978 fierce surf wiped out over 20 more, and in 1980 mudslides and floods closed all exits, stranding thousands. But there aré worse places to be trapped then Malibu, where mountains push their way to the sea providing one of the most spectacular coast- lines in the world. The insur- ance companies call it a disas- ter area, but the approxi- mately 16.000 residents call it dise. Less than: 15 kilometres from Los Angeles, Malihu offers surfers, hikers, and sun worshippers a place to escape the smoggy city for a day or two. Few, however, stay to contend with wars nature regularly wages on this tiny beach community. Instead, the pack their plenic lunches, their surf boards, and their beach towels and drive back to town, envying what they probably consider the dreamy symbol of good living. It is not even a city. Approximately two kilometres wide and 40 kilometres long, Malibu is a zip code, But inch for inch it probably houses more movie stars, moguls and m: s figures than any- where else in the world. A motorist is likely to miss Malibu completely. Hot dog stands, real estate offices, gas stations and fences line the “highway, blocking the view of the dramatic hillls on one side and the glittering Pacific on But visitors hardy enough to descend the steep bluffs to the beach, or lucky enough to be invited through high gates, location for th beach scene on the screen, odds are it’s Malibu. Malibu’s reputation is based mostly on _ titillating movie magazine type gossip. There is even a move in the works based on a scandalous novel simply called Malibu. New settlements But seldom is it noted it’s just a small town. It’s not exciting news that the officer at the local bank always has a smile or joke for _ her customers, of that when the broker talks at the small E. F. Hutton office, he may be wearing sandals and a Mickey Malibu. Residents don’t get excited when they squeeze the Char- min’ at the local market next the: likes ‘of of Mary Tyler Moore, Carrol O'Connor and Billie Jean King, have coffee across from Paul Newman at the little nearby drugstore, or order ice cream alongside Cary Grant and his daughter at the community coda soap. MIXTURE OF Malibu is not just a play- ground for the rich and fa- mixture been called the world’s most expensive fault. The ‘‘old timers’’ who have lived in Malibu since the 'S0s like to sit around and recall the more rugged, romantic days, One favorite memory is the Old Raft bar, Malibu’s legendary watering hole. “Those were the good old days,” says a longtime resi- dent who remembers when Neville Brand, Lee Marvin drive, their motorcycles through the front door of the Raft and right up to the bar.”” The Raft is a parking lot now. Its septic tank over- flowed once too often and the state. coné=mned the prop- erty, The owner moved a few miles north to a new location on the beach and the place is a great favorite of tourists, but somehow It’s not the same. ‘Perhaps it is a little road paralleling the Pacific Coast Highway which best captures the Malibu mentality. The Old Road slips, slides, burns, cracks and washes out with seasonal regularity. Winter brings the rains, spring brings the slides, sum- mer brings the fires and fall brings the buyers who can’t wait to live here. And oh, the price per sliding inch.
