So far, 70 cents of every dollar spent on the uniforms has gone to Quebec-based companies which have reaped $36 million in the production of the traditionally-colored uniforms. The air force will once again be in the sky blue, a little darker than the old shade of the Royal Canadian Air Force. Sailors will be clad in double-breasted navy blue while their summer uniforms will be white. Soldiers will continue to wear green but the tunics are being cut from a lighter fabric and a new tan summer uniform has been added. The distinctive uniforms of land, sea and air were abolished and replaced with green when the three services were unified into the umbrella Canadian Forces in 1968. The green uniforms remained a point of contention for many members of the Forces and in 1964, when he became defence minister, Nova Scotia Tory Bob Coates initiated the return of the old uniforms. The 85,000 regular members and 25,000 reserve members will require 2.2 million individual items of clothing, ranging from 115,000 new black ties for air and navy personnel to 3,660 white skirts for women in the navy. Two million new rank badges are also needed. CREATES JOBS These millions of items add up to jobs — and most of them are in Quebec. Quebec gets lion's share of contracts The project will create and sustain 1,600 jobs over four years, said Jacques Laflamme, who is in charge of ordering the uniforms for the Department of Supply and Services. Of the 250 contracts awarded so far, 128 representing $36 million have so far gone to Quebec, because it is the centre of the textile industry, said Laflamme. While Montreal is gaining the biggest benefit, other garment making centres like Toronto and Winnipeg have also received million-dollar orders. Some Changes You Can See ... Others You Can Feel! Ford's Tracer compares well with Mazda 323 es FORD TRACER FOUR-DOOR HATCHBACK . . . This made in Taiwan car is a Mazda 323 in almost every other respect One of the intriguing things about the 1987 car model year is its diversity Manutacturers are bringing in cars from all over the place. For example. VW with the Brazilian-built Fox, Chrysler with the Chrysler-Maserati, GM with their Pininfarina-styled Allante, and Ford with their made-in-Taiwan Tracer, which is sold through the Mercury /Lincoln dealer network The Tracer is produced by Ford Lio Ho. of which Ford owns 70 per cent, and it’s actually a cosmetically altered Mazda 323. Same running gear, basically the same interior, and, with minor changes tailights grill, body trim — the same body. Where the 323 is available as a two-door hatchback, four-door sedan and four-door station wagon, the Tracer comes as a two-door or four-door hatchback This is good news. as the Tracer appears to be as well-assembled as the 323. Fit and finish are ex cellent, and the cars run very much the same with some minor differences. The Tracer interior, for example, has an extra five cubic feet of cargo space and cloth seats are standard Both engines are 1.6 litre, ohc four-bangers, but the Tracer is six cc's smaller in size and develops 71 hp compared to 82 for the 323. Reason: the Mazda has electronic fuel injection, Tracer a two-barrel car buretor. Torque output is almost the same, however Both cars have four-wheel independent suspen sion, rack and pinion steering, 13 inch wheels, and front disc/rear drum brakes. The 323 is the faster of the two, but not overwhelmingly so. The Tracer seems to be an excellent little runabout. Good on gas around 9.5 L, 100 km (30 mpg) — as comfortable as the 323, with the same firm ride, adequately powered, and very driveable The Tracer is a few dollars more expensive thar the 323, but comes with more standard features Now. effective today, Nissan announces Pathfinder, a new name and a brand-new 4x4 utility wagon Pulsor NX, a familiar name, but a totally new con cept in sporty coupes.
