We've had the showers, so bring on the flowers! As | slosh through the puddles, my thoughts return to seasons spent in even wetter and warmer places. We have spent s¢veral years roving around the South Pacif ic, almost two years of that in Fiji, on Vita Levu, the largest island. There are either 331 or 332 islands in the Fiji Group, depending upon whether it is low or high tide. This will tell you that water can be a pre- cious commodity on some islands. But not im the rainy season! We had gone to Fiji to build a sawmill, a chip mill and a chip loading dock. As we had visited Viti Levu previously on holidays, en route to Aus- tralia, we had some idea of what to expect in working conditions and logistics of carrying out our work. However, nothing properly prepares you for living and working in the tropics. If you base your expectations on a previous holiday, you have to pause to allow reality to catch up. No matter what you say, your friends and employers are convinced you are spend- ing most afternoons on the beach. Arriving in November, at the beginning of the wet sea- son, we first had to adjust to not so much the heat, but the humidity. The temperature can be quite pleasant, but when high humidity is added, the overall effect on northerners can be quite dramatic There is an adjustment time needed for the northern body to. adjust from supplying heat to supplying coolant. The time between can be downright unpleasant There were no houses avail- able for lease when we arrived just before Christmas. Most ex Patriots were on contracts which expired at the end of and we did not know that until then, no one would move We settled into living in a small hotel room that, thank- fully. overlooked an inviting pool: I spent the first week immersed in water up to my chin, the only place where I felt happy But, within a few weeks, we did acclimatize and even turned off the air conditioning We were determined to blend with the locals as soon as pos- sible and we did We were able to get An office organized, purchase supplies and equipment, hire staff and generally get the pro- ject on track. The Better Homes and Gardens Books editors covers a major Portion of the 324-page Step-by-Step Landscaping to choosing and using plantings in home landscaping, including fence. and screen plantings. Here is how the book's editors sug gest you plan desirable views into your landscaping scheme: + Your view can be serene and peace ful with minirial maintenance, or bold and exciting with bright flowers Combine ornamentals with edible trees and shrubs for delightful blooms and tasty meals. +Plan carefully for maximum season of interest. Lilacs perfume the air for a few precious days in the spring Dogwoods offer spring flowers and excellent autumn color, as well as interesting winter shape. Viburnums and crab apples have showy flowers and fruit that attracts birds. Smoke trees bloom for months. *Flowering shrubs, trees, and ground covers give form, color, and interest for decades with very litle work. Yet many gardeners find that flowers, herbs, and vegetables are always worth the extra effort + Either in your mind's eye or on paper, plan your plantings so colors will combine harmeniously and con- tinue at every season of the year. Perennials and spring bulbs can be the backbone of such plantings, but annu als are the color champions that will bloom from spring until frost. Keep heights, colors. and times of bloom in mind for a view that tantalizes onlook ers all season. Large drifts of the same flower and clumps of three or more of the same small shrub will make a more definite statement than too much of a mixture. *Some plants, like the first crocus and early magnolia, should be near the blooms benefi from a vertical background. Put the tallest plants nearest the fence. 1-5'to 4' ANDROMEDA CAMELLIA COSMOS HIBISCUS HOLLYHOCK ROSE house and entryways so you can see them up close.
