A total of 29 mem. bers were present for the dinner, as well as hospital administrator Ken Talarico, hosital board chairman Merv Rush and director of nursing Denise Reed. Denise Reed thanked the auxiliary for recent purchas- es for the hospital and spoke on the in-hospital program — quality assurance and goal achievement — and on the functions of the Red Cross and asked for volunteers to man the blood donor clinic coming soon to Castlegar. Ken Talarico brought the auxiliary up to date on the plans and progress for the new extended care wing and thanked the ladies for all their work and contributions, as did Merv Rush. Annual reports were heard from all committees. It is noted that the auxiliary has had an extremely active year. Muriel Wilson, Teena Leitch and Patsy Popoff at- tended the sod-turning cere- mony for the extended care wing, recently held on the hospital grounds. Winner of the 20-ounce silver bar was Tannis Zoob- koff of Thrums. The bar was donated by the hospital and raffled by the auxiliary. to the i building became the first Pentecostal Church’ God in that swaying, creaking little church and how Pastor Sahlstrom transported children in a 1928 Chev, home-built wooden van for the first Sunday school. The church remained quite small in the little trailer until 1952 when two enthusiastic young ladies, misses Jean Pennoyer and Frances Clemo, arrived with prayer zeal, and determination to literally build a church with hammer and nails and very little else, after the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada bought the lot behind Jim Lamont's Shell Garage at 767-11th Avenue. Pastors from Trail and Nelson and city residents Don Phillips and Eric Holmquist added carpentry support to the zeal of the ladies who were often seen busily working with hammer and saw to build the first church with its innovative brick siding and living quarters above the sanctuary. . In 1958, with a growing congregation, the church was doubled in size by addition of a new sanctuary with fellowship room upstairs; the older part becoming Sunday school rooms. This building is now owned by Leo Bosse and leased to Selkirk College as their adult extension campus across from the new Forest Service - building. This first church served Castlegar for 35 years as the P 1 Tabernacle. auxiliaries conference in Pen ticton are Anne Nazaroff and Nettie Stupnikoff. Anne Nazaroff will head a work shop on music therapy. The last meeting of this season will be held in the form of a pot-luck dinner at the home of president Mar. garet Davidson on June 20 at 6 p.m. In 1960 Pastors Roy and Lois Webb arrived to replace the ladies who shepherded the work from mission to church. The Webbs were followed by Rev. Keith and Betty Cooper and family in1966 and Rev. Max and Jean Simmonds in 1967. In 1970, Rev. Lester and Pat Markham served as pastors and in 1971 Rev. Harold and Margaret Graham cared for the church until they retired to Creston in 1978. Rev. Roy and Elvia Hubbeard followed the Grahams. With the church filled to capactiy, in 1981 the els FIRST CHURCH . . . Carl and Norma Sahistrom are pictured in front of the first Pentecostal Church in Castlegar. congregation launched out to purchase the old farm East of Castlegar Primary school which was large enough to give Castlegar both a new church and a family housing development. The Pentecostal Benevolent Society at Castlegar was formed and in 1982 Maranatha Court came into being with 34 housing units for children to senior citizens. Concurrently, a new church with seating from 400-600 was designed by Vancouver architect Vern Delgatty. Pastor Hubbeard saw the ground breaking in August, 1982 with volunteer work continuing by faith and much perserverance for the next six years through the heat of summers and the snows of winter. The congregation moved into the unfinished building in 1987 as work continued. Now the building is finished. In 1984 Pastors Ken and Ilene Smith and family arrived to pastor the church. The church was renamed Pentecostal.New Life Assembly and on May 29 will be dedicated to God for the people of Castlegar. The congregation invites visitors during their dedication weekend starting Friday night with a reunion; Saturday morning with a pancake breakfast and Calgary rodeo singer Jack Jackson; and Sunday afternoon dedication service with District Superintendent Reuben Schmunk. _ of Wednesday, May 25, 1988 Supplement to the Castlegar News a eiyir twa Cette f eter ferret errs | EH iF r Ftd Br ia ity T ili iis Hd if cf ats FINANCE OUR SPECIALTY e ice PREMIUMS © 100% FINANCING FOR 90 DAYS ¢ NO PAYMENTS OMCMLXXX VII Leon Shatter Golnick e TRY US.
