Island says he was mir.
aculously cured of a heart
ailment at the shrine in
Ste-Anne-de-Beaupre nine
years ago.

Every year since then, the
5l-year-old Micmac Indian
has packed his large family

into a camper and embarked
on a 1,440-kilometre pilgri-
mage to the basilica, 35 kilo-
metres east of Quebec City.

Recently, he was joined
by 200,000 other people from
across Canada and the
United States, many of whom
hoped to be cured of ailments
for which doctors say there is
no cure,

During the novena, pil.
grims inside the twin
steepled basilica, walk slowly
past the Stations of the Cross
carved out of the steep cliff
behind it, sing traditional
hymns in candlelit proces
sions and browse through

shops.
Since 1658, when a local
disabled man was said to

have been miraculously
cured while laying stones to
build a small chureh, pilgrims
have been flocking to the
town and many more mir-
acles have been reported.

Surveys by the Redemp-
torists who run the basilica
suggest about 1.6 million
people visit the shrine every
year.

tion of St. Anne. Her story
appeared a few centuries
after the founding of Christi-
anity, in the Eastern Church.
After many years of being
childless, St. Anne is said to
have had her prayers an-
swered when she gave birth
toa child — the Virgin Mary,
mother of Christ.

Canadians who have rejected
the religion of their youth
have dubbed Ste-Anne-de-
Beaupre the “miracle mart.”

To them, the crutches and
old-fashioned orthopedic de-
vices left behind by pilgrims
who claimed they were mir-
aculously cured there have
become the symbol of every-

thing that was kitschy in
their society.

But for Najat Binno, who
was born in Iraq and now
lives in Detroit, Ste-Anne-de-
Beaupre spells hope.

“Doctors say there is
nothing they can do for him,”
she said of her blind four
year-old son.
