Salvation Army
to do battle
in Castlegar

The Salvation Army is set-
ting up shop in Castlegar.

“We hope to be up and run-
ning by next week,” Lieu-
tenant Kevin Moore said.

“The Thrift Store for sure,
and the food store sometime
over the next two or thee
weeks,” he said. “In an emer-
gency situation we can come
up with food for people in dire
straits.”

Moore said a definite need
for a food bank has been rec-
ognized in the city.

“We've been told by Social
Services the need is great in
Castlegar. I imagine there’s
100 or more people at least,
plus students who may find
they need some help,” Moore
said.

“We decided to take the
plunge and see what we could
do.”

Moore said in Trail alone
the Salvation Army has 300
caseloads on file.

It’s that kind of demand
that has Moore looking to re-
cruit some more volunteers.

“Basically we have one full-
time position and one part-
time. The rest is volunteer
help,” he said.

“We have somewhere in the
neighborhood of five or six
(volunteers) and we’re looking
for more.”

The Salvation Army is at
1100 - 3rd Ave. They will have
a phone number as soon as the
lines are installed this week-
end.

Liberals set sights on Rossland-Trail

the Columbia River at Castlegar, Liberal
leader Gordon Wilson says

The West Kootenay will be flooded with a
fistful of Liberal MLAs Tuesday.

Party leader Gordon Wilson will be bringing
in five of his MLAs with him to tour the area
and meet the people.

It’s part of the Liberals’ province-wide sum-
mer tour. ee

“We're very concerned that people in Castle-
gar have a voice in Victoria,” Wilson said ina
telephone interview Wednesday.

Wilson said he is fully aware of promises
made by the Social Credit and New Democra-
tic parties to local residents — in particular, the
Castlegar-Robson bridge.

“The problem is, this government is like the

B.C..with no Liberal candidate.

“We're focusing on the interior, and con-
structing a Liberal presence,” Wilson said.
“We're on an active candidate search around
the province.

“At this point I haven’t an idea of who will be

little boy who cried wolf,” he said.

He wondered how the province
suddenly managed to come up with
funds to build the bridge when they
previously claimed they never had
the money.

“With this major announcement
you have to wonder where the min-
ister was at budget time,” Wilson
said.

“It’s a grave disservice to the
people,” Wilson added. “Highways
are the arteries of our economic
blood.”

Wilson plans to boost Liberal ac-
tivity around the province, and the
Rossland-Trail constituency is a
logical target: it’s one of only two in

considered, but that won't be
for a while yet. We should
know by the middle of next

Considering the first sit-
ting of the legislature is also
the first time his party is the
official opposition, Wilson is
pleased with the Liberals’
performance thus far. But he
expects some improvements.

. “We're able now to focus
on an (NDP) agenda that’s
befome obvious,” Wilson
said.

“You will see a much more
focused and aggressive oppo-
sition,” the Liberal leader

added.

Kristiansen to collect $27,000 per year

Lyle Kristiansen’s retirement pension has Castle-
gar's Reform Party candidate far from retiring in his
thoughts on the issue.

Kristiansen, who will have been MP for Kootenay
West-Revelstoke for nine years when he retires at
the end of his current term, will receive a pension
benefit of $27,000 per year.

“That’s more pension than a regular civil servant
would get with a full career,” Reform candidate Jim
Gouk said, adding that Kristiansen’s pension is
“clearly disproportionately high.”

According to Gouk’s calculations, a civil servant
receiving a $27,000 pension would have to earn an
average salary of $38,000 per year over six years.

As well, as long as they have reached 60 years of
age, or their age and their years of service equals 85,
they would be entitled to indexing (similar to a cost
ofliving adjustment).

However, Gouk says an MP who has served for
six years receives a pension with no penalty for.ear-

ly retirement.

Kristiansen, noting that the MP’s pension plan is
self-financing, said Gouk is “out to lunch.”

“(Our work) is subject to public decision every
four or five years, with major disruptions to accru-
al of seniority,” Kristiansen said.

“It’s not a rich pension, but it’s adequate,” he said.
“You can get by on that.”

According to Kristiansen, the formula for an MP's
full pension is 75 per cent of his or her average in-
come during his or her five highest-paid years.

Kristiansen is moving back to Nelson for a while
and then moving to his summer cabin at Madeira
Park on the Sunshine Coast.

As a former lumber industry representative for
the International Woodworkers of America, Kris-
tiansen plans to return to that field in his retire-
ment. “I wouldn’t mind helping start up a province-
wide retiree's organization for the IWA,” he said.

The organization would give former employees an
opportunity to provide expertise in developing poli-
cy for B.C., Kristiansen said.

The five MLAs arriving in Castlegar Tues-
day are social services critic Val Anderson, mu-
nicipal affairs critic Art Cowie, education crit-
ic Jeremy Dalton, energy critic Dan Jarvis and
environment critic Judy Tyabji.

Talks between West Kootenay
Power and the Office and Techni-
cal Employees Union Local 378
have broken down.

The OTEU asked mediator Don
Cott to book out of the negotia-
tions. The union will be in a legal
strike position Saturday.

This is the second time Cott has
been asked to leave the table.

On July 14 the International
Brotherhood of Electrical Workers
Local 213 also asked Cott to book
out of talks with WKP.

The breakdown came as a sur-
prise to Mike Bradshaw, WKP’s di-
rector of community and public af-
fairs, who said the OTEU had
seemed satisfied with progress as
recently as Aug. 21.

“They changed their minds, I
guess,” Bradshaw said.

“We were fairly optimistic an
agreement would be reached,”
OTEU president Ron Tuckwood
agreed. “There was some progress,
but not enough.”

Tuckwood said the fact that the
IBEW is already striking was a
factor in the OTEU's decision to
serve strike notice, since his union
is honoring IBEW picket lines.

“We're not receptive to getting
into an agreement that will see us
facing (IBEW) picket lines for pos-
sibly a long time,” he said.

But Tuckwood said failing to
sign an agreement has nothing to
do with wanting to collect money
from the defense fund.

“Strike pay is not a reason for
putting up picket lines,” he said.

Tuckwood says WKP now has
the option of asking Cott to book
in.

«We're in a strike situation now
and we're discussing it,” Tuckwood
said.
