Fruitvale couple honored for contributions

Jo and Terry Bailey of Fruit-
vale were amoung nine B.C. fos-
ter families to receive the 1993
Lieutenant-Governer's Foster
Families Award, presented by
Lieutenant-Governer David C
Lam during a‘special afternoon
ceremony at Government House,
Friday, October 22

Established by the Ministry of
Social Services and the B.C. Fed-
eration of Foster Parent Associa-
tions in 1990, the
Lieutenant-Governer’s Foster
Families Award recognizes the
contribution made by foster par-
ents across British Columbia.

Jo and Terry Bailey began fos-
tering nearly 30 years ago, caring
for a total of over 300 children in
Whitehorse, Yukon, and here in
B.C. Most have lived with the
Bailey's from anywhere from a
few months to five years.

“It was a natural extension of
the work we'd always done with
kids,” says Jo. “We both coached
gymnastics and square dancing
before we even knew each other,
so when we got married, it just
seemed natural that we have kids
around. We started in Whitehorse
by taking whole families - four or
five kids at a time - rather than
splitting the fanuly up

living with them, of whom 12 were
under the aye of eight. Says Terry

be hosting an acrylic workshop
on two successive weeks:
November 3 and November 10,
from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., in the
Senior Citizens’ Hall, Castlegar.

The instructor is Arlene
Stoochnoff, a local artist trained
in graphics and design. Mate
are supplied except for your

brushes, and there is a fee of $10
Ms. Stoochnoff is a talented and
enthusiastic artist and the work-
shop promises to be a rewarding
experience. The club welcomes
anyone who wishes to participate

Since they left the Yukon in
1984 to move to B.C., however,
their focus has shifted to smaller
numbers of children. The Baileys
now care exclusively for one or
two children at a time, most with
severe behavior problems.

“Our own six children, four nat-
ural and two adopted,” says Terry,
“were all pretty much grown when
we came to Fruitvale. We had the
time and the experience to take on
these difficult children. It’s a real
challenge, but they are very
rewarding. With a little tender love
and care and discipline, you can
see the changes, the progress

in Virginia” wrote that he was sick
and tired of hearing people claim the
are “all white," as though it were a
badge of honor. I share his views.

On my father’s side, I am Austr:
an, German and Swiss. On my
mother's side, | am Spanish and
Aztec-Mexican. I remember vividly
my sixth-grade teacher handing out
cards for the class to fill out. The
cards had blanks for. “nationality”
and "race." In that class were white,
black, Asian and Hispanic children.

Next to "race," the black kids
were expected to write "Negro," a
word which has since fallen into ill
repute. This caused a bit of a stir
because it made them feel "differ-
ent, one girl explained. I was
embarrassed for her when she asked,
"Exactly what do they want to
know?"

As for me, with such a varied
background, I didn't know how to
respond to the question about
“nationality.” When I asked, the
teacher said, in a very stern voice,
“You may write ‘AMERICAN'
where it says ‘nationality,’ and
‘HUMAN ' where it says ‘race."

That teacher taught us a lot that
day. When we saluted the flag, it
made us feel that it belonged to all
of us.

This happened in Los Angeles in
the 1930's, The teacher was part
Sioux Indian. She was the strictest
and by far the best teacher I ever
had.

rather concentrate on the similarities
of humans instead of their differ-
ences," a sentiment that struck just
